I am closing on a boat this week .the listing and the surveyor say it's a 135 but from the pictures it looks like a 120 .
The listing has it's a 135 pH the survey has 2725 e . It has the flat rear manifold like a 120 .did different companies use different parts
The hp doesn't matter to me I just want to have the right spare parts. I need to move the boat 250 miles and need a few parts for the trip

the serial number on my 120 block, sold to me and agreed by a surveyor as a 135, is behind the hose from the expansion tank to the heat exchanger and the fuel injection pump.

Send a photo to Brian Smith at American Diesel. He can sort out anything to do with FLs.

Post a pic here. It will get solved real quick. Fresh water cooling pump hose routing, and a few other differences I can think of.

As far as I know the lehman 135 has a chrome valve cover

I have seen some without the chrome cover . but they had the air intake on the top of the manifold.i have a another pic but it's too large to post

and my 120 has the chrome cover....

the PO replaced the 135 block with a 120, but used many regular and adapted parts from his old 135.

always best to check the block serial number.

American Diesel was stumped quite awhile when I was I was ordering parts till we went through some of the block specific features.

I really just want to get the hoses filters belt impeller and exhaust riser and gasket .I would like to leave Friday to get it.so I need to order the stuff fast.

even with a 120, depending on water pump model changes the impeller, the alternator could change the belt, the fresh water pump may change a hose.... hate to be a downer... but need to check each.

Most of the Lehman parts should be the same for the 120/135. Unless someone substituted a johnson raw water pump for the original jabsco. johnson impeller is a tiny bit thicker. Check the pump cover plate.

Are you just putting together a complete set of spares? Change the filters, Check belt tensions, check each hose for squishy spots, check pump output at exhaust, if the engine was maintained you should be good for 250 mi.

Make sure your SeaTow membership is current

for those that havent seen one, I have read there is a strange tractor fresh water pump for a 120 that routes the hoses behind the belts.

probably rare, but you never know.....

Look on your injector pump for a drain plug since that needs to get changed on a scheduled basis. There isn’t one on the pump for the 135.

Your air intake is different and I’ve never seen a SP135 with a number tag on the rocker arm cover.

The drawings are for the 135.

thanks for the help and suggestions. looks like I will have to wing it . maybe the po .has some spares that go with it . I'm in too deep to back out now . my insurance has towing and I'm going to add towboat us also . they are right across from my slip.
are the oil and fuel filters the same?

thanks again
Tim

yes i'm going to do that they were suppose to send me a quote(I never got it) but that was before I knew I had an id problem so the quote may have been for the wrong parts (135).I can't verify much now the boat is 5 hours away. I'm trying to put together a crew to go with me to go get it everyone wants to go until it's time to go.

120 typically has rear heat exchanger, 135 has side-mount. Your pic shows a 120 exhaust manifold, with the bleed petcock at the forward end. Check the ID sticker on the valve cover; 2715e is a 120, also called a Dorset, and 2725e is a 135, called a Dover. 120s have a fan belt that reuires removal of a main water hose to change the belt

mystery solved by American diesel on a Sunday evening .that's awesome service. it's a little of both. see below .thanks to all.

Tim:

You are looking at an American Diesel 6N136 diesel.* It is a Ford 2725E that we marinized and sold to the boat builder in the 1980s. Parts are readily available for this unit and many of the external parts are interchangeable with the Lehman 6D380-120.* The internal parts are the same as those used on the Lehman SP135.

When Bob designed the 6N136, he wanted to improve upon the Lehman 120 platform and as such, you will see that the oil filter is in the up-right position on a riser with only two oil lines.* In addition, the engine oil cooler is in the fresh water circuit to allow the oil to get to temperature more quickly and to remove the need to service that cooler.*

We are attaching the spare parts list for this engine along with a few images.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

I would gladly pay a premium for FL parts to keep American Diesel viable. Their knowledge of these engines is encyclopedic and service to owners is above and beyond. For those of us who depend on these venerable, red workhorses, “we won’t know what we’ve got ‘til it’s gone.”

Don't worry about the premium, you are definitely paying it.

So am I and I agree it is worth it.

Right you are . . . and gladly. :thumb: The word “would” didn’t really belong in my last post.

Like you, I think, I prefer to support folks who support and provide value to the boating community.

well, I will confess I wasnt happy about the 2 bolts for $40 (half shipping).... could have purchased the same locally for less than $1 a piece.....probably a freak situation.

but $38 for some of the advice was a bargain... :)

and in fairness, on other projects they told me to just buy the bolt locally and told me exactly what to buy.

I've never owned a Lehman, but I know people who do/have and have had dealings with American Diesel. Every comment I've ever heard about them has been extremely positive. They know that engine inside and out and can diagnose problems over the phone better than a lot of mechanics can sitting in your engine room.
If I ever own a Lehman powered boat, I would make it a point to visit them at least once a year to buy something, just so they know my face and name. They are only about 25 miles from my marina.
