Bronze type for railing latches

2 of 4 railing gates are missing the bronze slide and thumb screw. I'm attempting to order 5/16" bronze rod, springs, and thumb screws to create new slides.

What type of 5/16" round bronze should I order? I don't have a lathe, limited to sanding, grinding, drill press and thread tap.

"Aluminum bronze" or "Silicone bronze?"

Have you thought of just turning an old bolt to what you need?

Thank you. I would love to invest in a small lathe, but just don't have room in the garage.

Edit: for the thumb screw part, yes I think a 10/32" bronze bolt with a round head is the easy solution.

Created new slides today. Using a screw as suggested. I'll switch from stainless to bronze next time I'm at a marine chandlery. Thanks for the help.

I did this same project last year. I used stainless round bar for the slide and for the pull I used a stainless allen head bolt. I purchased a bag of 316 stainless springs.

The allen head gives you that barrel shape like the original and is a little easier on the fingers.
