Potable Water Fitting

One of the fill caps treads have wear to the very fine thread points, it’s difficult to remove or screw back into the fitting. It still seats tight using the top thread or two but to remove it requires gripping with finger tips and slowly turning.
Looking for anyone with a spare fitting, cap or replacement ideas. The opening is about 1 5/8” and the tube reduces down to about 1” probable all metric sized to the tank fill hose.

Bill, I don't quite understand what the problem is but several companies make those fittings. Try Sea-Dog or Suncor stainless. It usually takes some effort with a wrench to make the first couple of turns when opening to break the oring loose. Then the cap should just spin out with your fingers. A little silicone grease on the oring helps.

Thanks Parks, the crest on the cap threads after thirty years are worn off so it’s difficult to screw on or without cross threading. The cap tightens with the key because the top couple threads are still there, after loosening you have to slowly finger tip unscrew it while lifting it.
I’ll check out Sea Dog and Suncor.

Bill: Let us know what you end up doing. I have the same problem, same cap. I’m afraid I’ll get to the point that I’ve screwed up the threads permanently.

This sounds like a warning to lubricate the threads of the cap and fitting from time to time so they won't wear out. And of course that would go for fuel and waste fittings as well.

Replacement shouldn’t be hard to find.

Parts are easy to find. The actual replacement can be anything from a piece of cake to a nightmare.

Larry I find that the Perko #0520DPWCHR (W code for water) has a flange OD of 3 5/8” chromed bronze for 1 1/2” hose.
White Cap #6125C ( 5 coded for water) has a 3” flange, 316 stainless steel also for 1 1/2” hose.
I’m collecting information on the length of the pipe under the flange. My fills the last time I had the louvered vent cover off where roughly 6” long. If the replacements are shorter it may require making up a filler piece, no way I’m replacing the OE hose.
I know Perko quality, not familiar with White Cap but like the photos of the 316 s/s fill.
If I go with white Cap I have a retailer near by saving shipping cost plus pricing is better than the Perko fitting.
My water fill flanges are 3 1/4” +- so I need to pull it out and see what size hole is in the f/g before deciding.

aboatman, you may be right, no such thing as a easy boat fix but at least it’s topside in a sunny roomy area to work.

Just got a reply on the Perko, the pipe length below the flange is 3 3/8” long, difinitely would need a filler piece to work with OE hose on our boat.

Perko is excellent but because it is chrome plated bronze, not stainless, it won't match your existing fittings.

Perko is made in the USA, in fact made in Miami. The stainless ones are imported, probably from China.

Bill: What I'm hoping for is for that you to find a cap that is a direct replacement so I don't have change the whole thing.

Parks: When we installed the new fuel fills, we used Whitecap’s 2”, 316 ss. The build quality look good and the caps fit very well. There’s no question on which one is Whitecap’s.

Larry, is the one next to the stantion made of Marinium? It has the look of aluminum but I can't really tell in the photo.

Larry, finding a replacement cap with the same threads, probable metric will be tough. A machinist might be able to make one. I can see why with the teak deck you’d want to do only the cap.

Parks: I hadn't heard of Marinium to you posted. I doubt it though.

I believe it's old SS that I've never polished. Its' the same era as Bill's water fill, 1987 and installed by the same boat manufacturer, Krogen, probably in the same yard.

Larry, the White Cap sure does look nice. They do a great job polishing their hardware.

I have the same problem, all my fittings are metric so readily available caps do not work. To get a banjo fitting for the pump out I had to go to a machine shop and have one made. I shudder to think what I will have to go through if I drop a cap over the side.

At some point I will have to replace all of them to something that is easily found.

Wow, It's rare to find something that is cheaper in Australia, especially with the present exchange rate.

The difference may even pay for shipping to USA.
