Syncro-Start ?

On my 1979 34 main ship I have this little black box mounted on bulk head with syncro start oon it ? This boat is totally new to me with no history . It looks factory installed from 1979 and has some wires going to it . Is anyone familiar with it and what it does ?
 
If I remember correctly it was used as a relay for the stop switch. I removed mine & went straight from the switch to the stop solenoid & haven't had any issues. Disclaimer: I ran all new ,larger gauge, wires from the new stop switches to the stop solenoid.
