Diesel tank sight tube sump

I'd like to add a sight tube to my tanks. Is a sump of this style suitable for installation as a drain sump or with a sight tube for my aluminum diesel tank?

If you are a pleasure rated(non commercial passenger) use vessel then normally the rules and regulations such as ABYC/RYA/Lloydd's etc dont apply but they do offer some very good idea's and prudent points such as:

Glass or plastic tube or strip-type fuel gauges must be:
1) protected against physical damage; and,
2) closely coupled (connected) to the tank; and,
3) fitted with self-closing valves at top and bottom (note that the
self-closing valve at the top is not required if the gauge connection
is made to the top of the tank); and, complete and free of leaks and other signs of damage.

For me the two I try to talk owners into is placing a valve at the low side of the line and the second either protected or out of the way of normal traffic/working area's when in the engine room or where ever the tanks are located
