With Irma's wrath largely over, leaving various TF stories in her wake, it seems like a good time to offer up the entire first chapter, as a reminder of why many of us deal with the vagaries of boat ownership.

The "famous" part of this chapter is quoted everywhere. But it's the immediate effect on Mole that so beautifully captures the allure of the boating life. Read as much - or as little - as you like.

Cheers.

I loved that book!

Funny, I chose my screen name before I even read it.

Kitty aka River Rat

PS 289 days to retirement and full time boating!

Thank you so much for posting that. I'm going to re read it. It's been a while. I just finished chapter one and enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading it again.

Funny. About the time you must have wrote this post I stared at my copy on my bookcase. Think I'll pull it down and read it again.

The PO of my boat had the iconic saying,
"There is absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing, as simply messing about in boats", on a small plaque mounted at the helm of my boat. I left it there...of course... because... :iagree:
