Our Lehmans have 5,500 hours on them. Maintenance records before our ownership are incomplete but there exist enough information to conclude that the damper plates have never been replaced. One transmission was overhauled at 2,300 miles but there was no mention of damper plate replacement. Given that the plates do not last forever and at 5,500 hours they have probably lived about as long as one could hope, I want to get them replaced.

It's a job I could likely do myself but I choose not to do so. I am looking for a "guy" in the Annapolis area who is experienced with Borg Warner Velvet Drives mated to Lehmans. Our Defever 44 has great access to both the engines and the transmissions.

Any wrench turner can do it....no need for a specialist.

4 bolts per shaft coupking, 6 bolts on the tranny 10 plus on the bellhop sing but mine only had 8 or so, 6 bolts on the dampner plate. Easy peezy if they aren't rusted in. Mine came out like butter but the engine block was replaced in 2009.

The biggest issue is getting enough room to get the bellhousing off so dropping the shaft back about 4 inches is required, then the tranny can come out long enough to replace the dampner plate.

For me, it would have been an afternoon job had I been able to hoist the tranny out easier.

American diesel has the dampner plates for $160.

That and the torque values for the bolts is all the mech needs.

As was recommended in my thread, if everything is out...rear seals on the main and both on the tranny might be smart to replace if high time.

Yes, quite right. But I still need a recommendation for a good "wrench turner" in the Annapolis area. Actually, I am a pretty good wrench turner myself but I have plenty of other boat projects underway already getting ready to do "the loop" next season after I retire for the second time.

I'm not sure you can change the rear seal on the Lehman without dropping the pan and removing the rear cap. It's old school two piece. Some say you need to remove or drop the crank.

Rear seal replacement? Thanks, but my question was on replacing the damper plate.

Guess that goes back to my post....if all you need is a dampner plate replaced...you don't need a good mechanic or anyone that knows something about Lehmans or Borg Warners.

Call any marina or travelling marine service that you can get a number for.

This time of year may be tough to get anyone, especially "specialist" guys that for this job you really don't need, just someone that you think will do the job correctly.

Try Bayshore Marine Engine Services 410-263-8370.
