Servicing ZF transmission

I am in the process of servicing my boat before our trip from Florida to Tennessee.
I've changed the oil, filters and impeller on my Cummins QSB5.9 230 hp engine and also changed the transmission fluid in the ZF transmission.

I took the filter out to replace it and am unable to get it back in!

Does anyone have any suggestions as how to press it back in place?

I replaced the O rings and cannot get the filter assembly back in.

I have ZF63A's and this is the procedure from my service manual. Do the old and new filters appear to be the same?

The filters are only a metal screen and cleanable.
Clean the old one and see if it fits OK.
As Larry noted do the comparison.

My problem is getting the top/cover back down into place.
It is supposed to just press back in while twisting counterclockwise.
I struggled for quit some time and finally gave up.

My problem is that I am unable to get the top/cover assembly (fig 4)back into the trans housing.
Is there some adjustment with the allen wrench?

Make sure ALL the old O rings are out.

At box stores they sell small containers an OZ or two of silicone lubricant for assembling plumbing fixtures.

Works better than just grease for assembling.,

Allen head screw squishes oring. Put top cover in with screw loose, push it down firmly and while holding, snug screw. This squishes the oring and that holds it in place.

Filter is on suction side of pump, so there is no pressure there.

These things don't seem to fit that well, but do seem reliable.

I was finally able to get the Allen screw loose and the cover just slipped back in place. The Allen screw was VERY tight and I had trouble getting it loose.
All is good now!

This happened to me the day I took ownership of my boat. The allen head fastener in the middle of the cap was seized. I purchased a new cap assembly and spray that with WD-40 on a routine basis now.
