Just about to insure my boat and ringing around it seems Club Marine has lost the plot . I had a quote from Natalus Marine which was 30% less and after reading the product report they offer the same if not more . So question what others thoughts on marine insurance and who do you use

I use an insurance broker who checks various insurers at renewal time. Club Marine is always competitive on price for my boat and insurance history, and I'm still with them.

Read the policy doc carefully, not some marketing stuff (product report?) to be sure you will get what you think you are getting. Try and find some feedback of claims settlement for whoever you plan to use.

Boat brand and where you plan to keep it -marina berth or swing mooring - can be factors for policy prices as well.

Funny that this should come up today, I have been looking at insurance this afternoon.

I am awaiting on a quote from Club Marine at present and have just got one from Pantaenius this afternoon. I had a mate who worked for Pantaenius and he was quite upbeat about them. The one thing that Pantaenius does that Club Marine doesn't do is offer an agreed fixed value insurance. The insured amount is what you are paid in the event of a total loss. With Club Marine it is market value, despite the insured premium you pay, so beware on that.

On the flip side, we are , or were, with Club Marine for 19 years & have two large claims in that time, neither our fault, and I have to say they were very good at settling the claim even though there were significant issues with both claims.

Both companies require an 'current' survey and report, (within the last six months).

That's my two cents worth.

I'm with Trident Marine. They offer fixed price value. I haven't had to make a claim yet but their rates are much lower than Club Marine.

Choose carefully!

Some marinas in Queensland, between Brisbane and Hamilton Island, will not rent casual berths to boats insured with one of the Underwriters named below (not Club Marine) apparently because of their claims history (ie being difficult about paying claims, such that the marina operator does not want boats insured with that Underwriter in their marina).

I am with Club Marine. I have had 1 claim, it was resolved and paid without any issue or dramas. I had the works done by a shipwright of my choosing.

I was with Marine Hull/Club Marine for over thirty years. They were prompt and efficient with claims and I had no problems with their service at all.

I changed to Pantaenius four years ago based purely on their 'agreed value' offer, together with a cheaper premium. No claims with Pantaenius so far, so I can't comment on their service.

I`m with Club Marine, I heard they changed their underwriting practices, possibly making it tougher for insureds.
Friends with Club Marine had a total loss of their sailboat at Gosford in the 2015 east coast low affecting the NSW coast, during their first year of ownership and cover. Club Marine was fast and helpful, even set up a temporary claims "office" in a nearby yacht club.
My friends said a nearby boat owner insured with Pantaenius got a text SMS from them(presumably sent to numerous owners),wind blowing 35kts in foul conditions, to go check his mooring gear on its swing mooring. Good idea in one way, but potentially dangerous out there in a dinghy in those conditions.

AndyG- for what it's worth I got an agreed value policy with club marine. I'm not sure who told you they won't do that but (at least in my case) they certainly do.

Thanks for that, I will have a chat to the broker who arranges my insurance.

Not sure agreed value is possible on older boats. i think that's what I was told....

Who is your broker Andy? Marine specialist? A PM is fine if you prefer.

Gaston, did you try telling CM about the Nautilus offer, if so what did they say?

Well lets for the present just say after phone and email dealing with "Nautilus" I decided to let Andrew Moore arrange everything with Club Marine and pay the extra $500 for reassurance I was dealing with a "professional company" with a excellent rapport in the industry. Thanks Guys for your input

Gaston, do you pick up your new IG 32 today? I was down working on Sarawana at the club and saw the IG depart downstream. I was on my way over to say hello.

Yes picked up "Barrenjoey" today and we are back on the marina at Berowra Waters having Kirin beers and snags its all I can afford now .
We had a shocking trip from Palm Beach all the way down to Juno Point . We sat on 2400RPM with trim tabs down nose up and big grizzley waves chasing us right down to Juno wipers on my wife had her jacket on :D Wished I had taken a video but our phones and lunch was on the floor somewhere

Interesting trip for starters!
I think you're gonna need a bigger boat.....

Yeah Brian. Think you're right. I offered him my Clipper 34 - she would have loved those conditions...those 2 extra feet...and Lotus just loves surfing down those following waves. I've see her at 11.5kn in those conditions with no steering issues. :D

Was that before or after you had eaten your lunch?
:rofl: Hope not. Sounds like a fun delivery voyage.:)
Broken Bay, after exiting Pittwater, opens to the Pacific ocean to the east. Any swell penetrates strongly, further than Juno Point. Broken Bay can be nasty, we`ve had, are still having, strong easterly weather. Blowing the oysters of the rocks earlier today.
I heard, from an RMYC member (not Andy) the original owners of Barrenjoey were the Paxton family, well known for camera and photography stores in Sydney.
Barrenjoey is a great looking boat in good order. Hope to meet up cruising.

Hi Bruce,

I did not put 2 and 2 together , but Paxtons have a 46 or 47 now,I think it is a Sea Ranger ? Called Barrenjoey. Not certain on the breed thou.
Nice looking boat , have spotted it on a mooring at KMYC recently .

Yes weather has certainly been ordinary , we spent the weekend out on Pittwater , anchored overnight at Towlers with a constant 20 plus knots last night, with gusts close to 30 ........... Put out 45 metres of chain in 6 metres of water just to be confident of a good nights sleep. Waterfall at Lovett's bay was pumping away. Came back this afternoon and the sun comes out, and winds settle down. !!!!! Typical .

Cheers Chris D

Guys, here is my 2 cents worth. I have been with Club M for over 20 years now and 2 reasonable claims under my belt. Both were dealt with quickly and efficiently.
Recently I was going to change as some insurers were cheaper and in this climate that is usually good.
I am now boat based in Mackay and a couple of months ago the yacht next door, one of those french units and probably about 10/15 years old, started to sink, I was there and put in my emergency 240 V sump pump to pump her out before the marina management got down to take over. This was early morning and the owner was away.
Anyhow the boat had recently been insured with P and had had a survey to comply I assume. The end result was the owner was knocked back on his claim completely as it was a hose joiner on his toilet system that failed and was deamed old and worn( what constitutes this) gee I am old and worn.

Anyhow after this result I stayed with Club. Better the little more expensive devil you know than the unknown one with the good offer. It takes many years of $500.00/year savings to save up for a total or partial loss.
Cheers
Benn
Some days I just can't help myself John and just appear. A bit bored sitting at anchor on a rig tender up near Barrow Island

My boat is in hamilton island marina and is insured with club marine. I know of two boats near mine with two other companies.
Now Debbie is passed and assessors and repairers arrive on the island next Monday it won't be long and we can compare claims experience. Very few if any boats have no damage.
Maybe a few weeks before I can report experiences but I'll try.
Hamo

Great reminder as to so many more important factors in selecting an insurer than low premiums.
