Rebirth of a trawler

How about that?* Short story for you.* Mark Bowerman, Daddyo,* went to the darkside and I decided to list my 44' TD Vinnett with him.* He produced a good buyer within 3 weeks closing and money in hand within about 6 weeks.* As it turns out he produced and buyer who turned out to be a very likeable person and with a little input from me and a lot of effort from him produced the trawler you see below.* We just finished it's maiden voyage from Lanexa Va, on the Chickahominy River, to Seaford Delaware, on the Nanticote River a distance of about 220 miles using about 38 gallons of fuel.* Nice trip up the bay and boat turned out nice.* Bill the new owner modified to aft cabin to a full width aft cabin much like the Desiel Duck and it turned out nice.*

I'd like to thank Mark for a job well done.

Wonder what engine it has and what speed was used to get such great mileage.

Irony has a 6068 Deere which we cruised at 1500 rpm averageing 6.5 knots. We calculated to fuel by sticking the tanks before we started and after we ended the run. That is the best we could figure. We hope we figured it right, we went back and checked our figures several times. I bought this boat up from Marco Island FL in the Xmas New Years of 2000/2001. A run of about 1300 miles and we used just over 500 gallons of fuel and about 300 gallons of beer, two of my crew were drinkers.
On the trip from Fl we were pushed for time and ran the engine quite hard.* 1800-1900 rpms.

Looks capable too. Very nice outcome.....got any more pics. Tell him to join the site....lots of trawler interest and info. What about spec's.

I called him this evening and told him to look. Bill is kinda like I am, a little computer illiterate. I'm sure he will be on here eventually. It took me two hours to get that pic to show up. I'll try to get some before shots which I have in my album. It had a small aft cabin on the back with some bad spots in it. After he bought it from me he had a fellow with a plasma cutter come in and cut all the aft cabin and gunnels off and started over with the hull. I think it turned out really nice. Didn't change any of the handling characteristics of the boat at all.

OK guys,* I have to add something at this point:* I bought this Vinette North Shore 44 from Larry W. in January.* There were lots of 12 hour winter days in the Richmond area for exterior refit.* We did minor replating and the reconfigured aft cabin; new shaft, hung the spare 30" x 20" wheel, hand rails, etc.

During all of this I can't believe how helpful Larry was: I know I called him most days - and he visited often.* Larry is a real boater: not white ducks and navy jacket, but a vastly experienced hands on keep-her-going-somehow/anyhow kind of guy.* Yet none of his chewing gum and bailing wire skills were needed on the 220 mile run.* John, as Larry calls the engine, started on the first rev and ran all day, every day without incident.* Well, he should with only 450 hours from new; not remanned.

Re ecomomy, I am a happy camper!* I know many boaters reach for that 1 mi/gal mark.* Even with conservative adjustments in the calc. Irony performed over 5 Statute mi/gal.* On his 1300 mi rum up from Fl. he racked up about 2.6 mi/gal while pushing it to 2000 rpm and more.

Full info is:* John Deere 6068 turbo, twin disk 2.5:1, 30 x 20 three blade wheel, running 1450-1500 rpm, pushing 28 gross tons in 15-20 knot winds mostly on our rear quarter and astern.* She only rolled ~5-7 degrees but did not track well requiring us to saw on the helm to counter that snake track in the wake.

T.D Vinette suggests adding a fixed 5 degree trim tab to the trailing edge of the* rudder.* What do you guys think??
