This is a new thread for this weeks Panama Canal transit by Dauntless.

He started the transit Sunday .

They Did the first set of locks on his first day of transit - Sunday the 5th of March.

They will continue after a night on the hook & do the rest hopefully on the second day.

I will turn it over to Richard for him to add info as he goes, so stay tuned to get the complete low down.

Thanks.

Fascinating pictures and journey. Would love to rendezvous with you when you hit the SF Bay this summer. I'm sure other Bay Area TFers would like to do the same.

Best wishes

Richard

I would be a bit nervous locking among these giant vessels!

Yep, he's out of the locks and in the Pac.

Sooooo... Where to next??

Dauntless at Miraflores

Just watched Dauntless pass through Miraflores Lock followed by a very large car carrier
Will post photos later from computer
Looking good, Dauntless!!!

Bizarre incident at the start of our transit.
Swarmed by bees.
Weirdly, I just read about a boat that this happened to just last week.

One more milestone for Dauntless, congratulation Richard!
As for the bees, keep them aboard and you will get a good fresh honey every morning for your breakfast :D

It's pretty easy. The canal personal are very professional. As are the advisors and pilots.

No doubt they must be professional but I would feel like an ant in a giant world :) Just to think one of these day I will go through Montreal locks with container ships make me nervous

Thanks so much for your very interesting blog. Good luck on your trek up the Central American coast. You may encounter more helicopters too.;)

Will you?
Rec vessels are not allowed to transit a lock with commercial vessels in the Welland Canal System which is part of the Great Lakes system. So it stands to reason that Montreal would be the same.

Not sure, I know that commercial vessels have priority but not sure if recreationnal are transiting alone or not. I would just prefer to be alone :D

Just tie a tow rope on to the back of that new BC Ferry and you will be over half way to Alaska in no time.........:hide:

Richard:

Thanks for the picture of our new ferry. Saltspring Island has been waiting many years for a new ferry to replace the aging Queen of Nanaimo. Three identical new ferries were built in Germany over the last couple of years. The first has arrived and is preparing to enter service in BC, running from Comox to Powell River. Your picture is the second, expected to arrive safely in BC later this month and to enter service from Tsawassen to the Gulf Islands before the end of June. The third should be on its way from Germany soon, but details have not yet reached the news.

Awesome Trip!! Thanks for sharing!

There was a story locally last week that the Bees swarm in the spring as new queens colonize. (or something to that effect) They say around here to call a local bee keeper to come get them. Not sure you could do that in transit! I hope they found their way off the boat without too much disruption or carnage!

So, we just happened to be in Panama City after visiting Galapagos (by air!!) and decided to visit the Miraflores Locks. And,the second vessel to come into the lock was Dauntless!!
They were followed in by a sailboat (Swan??) and a humungous car carrier. Here are some photos of Dauntless coming and going (down) and going (out). Enjoy.
