Help on transmission gauge!

Port Cat 3208TA 507 TD transmission gauge goes to maximum reading when keying the system to start without the engine running. Is the sensor bad or to I have an issue with the trans. Boat runs fine when in gear. Any ideas to check will be appreciated.

What does it read when the engine is running and you're in gear?

Capt. same reading all the way to max. no difference from key to running. (300 I believe is max.)

To test the sender read the gauge with the sender wire grounded and then disconnected. Short and open circuit in other words. The needle should go from zero to full scale. If it does then the sender is bad.
