Replacement clear cylinders for Groco - Perko strainer

Perko, Raw Water Intake Strainer Transparent Cylinder for 500 Series

I just looked and the prices are outrageous? Mine also seems bigger than 3 inches.

Mine has a single central nut that holds the cover cap down. . The plastic cylinder does not leak, but is badly crazed all over.
Any ideas on a clear plastic pipe?

I was thinking, it looks a lot like this Groco strainer.
Mine has a large acorn nut holds on the cap.

Says is Lucite which is Acrylic tube, and is cheap by the foot, but 6 foot minimums makes it too expensive for me.

Something like a table saw can be used to cut this to get a straight end cut.

I have an older perko, 1-1/4" pipe size. Cylinder was 4" od.
Made my own of cast acrylic tubing. Made a spare. Done over 20 years ago , no crazing.

I also modified it to use O rings for the seal instead of the cork gaskets which kept rotting out. Those O rings are also over 20 years.
I think perko now offers nitrile gaskets which should last as long as o rings.

Never, ever, be tempted to use muriatic acid for cleaning build-up off the inside of clear strainer cylinders. It turns them opaque. Do not ask how I came by this piece of wisdom!

Perko casts their name into everything they make, and almost all of them have two wingnuts on the outside. Groco uses a single wingnut on a tie rod on some of their strainers.

Both manufacturers size their strainers by pipe size for the inlet and outlet, and often this inch size will be cast into the bronze on the outside of the female receiver.

After you identify and size the unit you have you may find the price of a replacement cylinder more reasonable.

As for acrylic tube keep looking. I got mine from a plastic fabricator. It may take a few tries.
I found it in McMaster Carr. If the page is correct they offer cut pieces.

I found the strainer is a 3/4" GROSS MECH.. LAB.
Cylinder is 3.5 wide by 4.25 tall, estimation by me.

This is an excellent strainer, considering it is from 1970 and fully functional. Been in saltwater the whole time. Basket in perfect shape too. The cylinder is crazed but not cracked. Even if it cracked open, can not sink boat as it is above waterline. Years ago, I raised it onto a copper bracket.

Thanks but I think mine is the s-70, not s-70a. s-70 has the correct height compared to mine. The ebay item is the s-70a taller version.
