Deck lift/Dry dock we just finished

I thought some of you guys might like to see some of my handy work. We just finished installing this 20,000# deck lift in Pass Christian. The deck that goes into the water is 40'x15'. The depth of the water is about 7' and the actual deck on the lift takes about 1' of space.

I have always wondered about boat lifts and how they deal with storm surge. The bottom of the deck seems to be only a foot above the water level. Any storm surge will push up and rock and roll that deck and the boat on it. It seems that the boat will have to be moved to a secure mooring when any storm is near and the deck pulled up higher than can be done with the boat on it.

That was a concern but we made the roof high enough so the boat could go up an additional 2.5' and that would cover any non hurricane surge. If the tide or surge is going to be over 5' above normal than the boat comes out and the deck goes to the bottom.

That makes sense. If you have 5' of water clearance you should be ok in anything short of a named storm.

We lived in Oriental, NC on Pamlico Sound for 5 years and I became very sensitive to storm surge. Last year the tide hit 4+ feet above normal with just a routine storm. The various hurricanes that hit over the last ten years: Irene, Isabell and Ophelia pushed it to 7-9' above mean water level. A heavy nor'easter could push it to 5' though.
