Quickie Bilge Paint

Satori has now come to have a dry bilge - that being the case I thought I would hop in there and repaint to make it a little cleaner looking...

No big deal - just thought I would share the pics.

Very nice . What paint did you use ? I just bought some Total Boat bilge paint for ours .

I was afraid someone would ask... it's not a paint formulated and/or marketed for use on a recreational boat...

The white stuff is a Kilz knock-off primer and the gray stuff is a glossy enamel.

OK, mentally prepared for the lectures that using anything not purposely formulated and priced for marine use will cause the loss of the vessel and forever render the boat worthless for resale.

How about this scenario... at night, at speed, I hit a submerged shipping container which splits the hull causing a rapid leak... the non marine engineered paint and primer dislodges from the substrate in the presence of water which then as a sheet wraps itself around the bilge pump inlets stopping their operation propogating inundation which I simply can't keep up with using the bucket so while awaiting assistance the beautiful Satori sinks. The insurance adjuster has to make the call... was it accidentally hitting the shiping container or intentionally using the non-marine paint in the bilge that sank the boat?

I use Kilz for many projects and bilge/dead space painting.


I think it was recommended by the guy who blogs "The TrawlerBeach House"....but not positive...but some other popular blogger maybe.

The concern with painting a bilge is assessing structural damage after a grounding on a GRP boat will be difficult.

If you haven't touched bottom , you haven't cruised much.

I recently used Sherwin Williams treadplex for the floor boards in the ER, seems to work quite well. Was supposed to be semi-gloss, but somehow ended up being flat. But, it was $1 for the gallon because it was a mis-tint so who am I to complain! I might pick up a quart of semi for the bilge areas

I use outdoor semi-gloss porch paint.

Most paints aren't made to have water sitting on them day after day, especially if the water is pooling. It's asking to have the paint flake off and lift.

So enamel is fine for areas of non-pooling. But if you have a place where water will sit, you should use something like BilgeKote that's designed for exactly the environment of pooling water.
