Bronze seacock ID

Hi Folks,

I am trying to identify this seacock in order to properly maintain/use it. Can anyone give me a manufacturer/model? It has a grease fitting (the nipple is just visible peeking out the right side of the seacock in the left hand pic) and a set screw on the bottom (not sure what the set screw does, so advice on that as well would be appreciated.

It is on a '78 MT 38 DC.

It really doesn't matter what brand it is, the maintence is pretty much the same.

Grease it and work the handle open and closed. If it moves freely and doesn't leak there isn't much else you need to do.

Otherwise, take it apart and clean it well. Then lube well and reassemble.

If it's the type with a close metal to metal valve then you can clean it and lap it with valve lapping compound for a good fit. After lapping clean it again, lube and reassemble.

The "set screw" is most likely for draining it.

The grease nipple (Zerk fitting) is steel. I should be removed after you pump in the grease and put a bronze pipe plug in the hole. The steel fitting can rust and break off. Had one nearly sink a 40 foot boat in my boatyard a few years ago.

Here is a How-To article on that type of valve from Compass Marine. Needless to say you need to have the boat out of the water to do this kind of work on that valve.

Good point about the steel zerk fittings. You might be interested that stainless zerks are available on EBay...cheap and all sizes, US and metric. I had one very badly corroded on my anchor roller so I started looking for stainless.
