The stuffing box on my '73 Gulfstar 36 needs tightening, and since I have not done it before, I am not sure whether it tightens clockwise or counter clockwise. Most things tighten clockwise, but on my sailboat it tightened counter clockwise, so I do not want to assume that. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

It's probably clockwise. The first fraction of a turn or looking at the exposed threads will show you. Most have two nuts; one serving as a locking nut to the other. The most important thing is to adjust without the shafts turning!

Tighten evenly if you have four bolts tighten a turn on one then go across to the one on the opposite side and take a turn on it. If necessary measure between the flanges to insure that it comes together in a uniform fashion. If they are fairly close together to start with you may have to add packing and /or replace packing.

I would seriously doubt that they are counter clockwise to tighten. Right should be tight
