Super low tide (3.6ft at Barefoot) + really nasty shoaling =

Third grounding of the day.

Mr. KJ. HAH! Ties MY record of 3 in a day just north of New Smyrna...Was able to self extricate.

These were three different boats.

Can’t say I’ve ever met someone that’s grounded three times in one day.

I’ve anchored at Rockhouse Creek in New Smyrna a couple of times. Some pretty strong currents through there. KJ

Pretty bad Sunday from Little River to Southport.


Ran aground about 30 feet inside a green at Shallots Inlet. Back off moved over about 15 feet into 8 feet of water. Within a half hour another cruiser went aground in a twin Silverton (thankfully incoming tide) and Boat US came and pulled him off.


Spent abut an hour on the radio giving directions to Northbounds all worried about Shallots and Lockwoods Folly Inlets. Sounds like they all made it through when they followed local directions and the buoys instead of their guesses.

Three days of stiff wind out of the northwest has pretty much emptied our small bay, so we're at about 2' below normal low tide... and I'm sitting in the mud. IOW, aground at the dock, no navigation required. Cold and windy, couldn't run heat; didn't want to slurp mud through our AC systems...

Groundings.... Hm.... This is the boat that I am buying. Owner found this rock at high tide at probably around 10 knots. This was back in 2010 when the boat was new. Might make a good Avatar....

Those guys sure picked an odd place to stand! It doesn't look like it would take much for that boat to roll on over.

I remember seeing that picture when it happened.

Still pretty incredible.

I'd be interested in hearing the captain's account.

PS-we lived at Shallotte Point directly opposite Shallotte Inlet for about 10 years. Was great summer fun watching boats run aground. The waters around the inlet change almost daily sometimes, especially in a winter Nor'Easter. Fortunately, it is all soft sand so usually no damage.
