Raymarine VHF 230 handset wire

Is this the end of the story?

Both the main handset and the remote (flybridge) handset wires are failing or have failed. Perusing Google has as yet been unhelpful. Raymarine's forum seems to say that the parts are no longer made.

Previous posts here did not seem to offer final dispositions.

I opened the remote handset up to see whether my intrepid and parsimonious self could adapt/splice some other manufacturer's cord/conductors. After all, soldering is not rocket science. However, the cord comprises ten conductors, one of which is quite different than the other nine.

Although there is apparent sun damage to the screen and the merest hint of water intrusion, I'd still be tempted to change the wires and buy a little time. (We have a couple handheld VHFs, so radio-less safety is less of an issue.)

The enclosed pic shows the disassembled handset, with the small plug, shards of waterproofing goo, latch, and screws - note that the two middle screws on the handset have washers and gaskets.

The post lists the cord part # - maybe check w/ Raymarine whether that part is available...

Sometimes the handset is no longer available but the cord is.
I replaced my R215 cord and it was pretty simple.

Bacchus, I'd seen those two posts. Your handset had a four-wire cable, otherwise a similar replacement project.

You didn't call Raymarine yourself and ask if the cords are available? The "quite different" wire is probably a shielded wire so it's actually two wires, a center conductor and a shield wrapped around it.


Compare the cost of repairing the handsets with replacing the entire radio with a newer, more modern one, perhaps one with built in AIS.
