For single or twin SeaRays in the 22 to 29 foot range this engine with the modern drive systems offered by Volvo is pretty popular. Piezo electric injectors, variable geometry turbo vanes and Tier 3.

Clearly it is not the choice for those who think DD 2 strokes and Lehmans are modern engines, but for today's recreational new builds where diesel is preferred vs gas, a very large market exists. The primary diesel competition for this engine is the Mercruiser 1.7. Emissions regs have so changed the market that today's marine gas engine is getting more complicated and expensive. Thus has entered the small high revving diesels with land based proven technology for modern applications.

So just as a GTI cannot compete with my Suburban, this D3 cannot compete with a Cat 3208. And yes FF people indeed ski and play on the water. Millions of us as compared to the rather small trawler market.
