Heads up on east coast dockage

We just completed a run down to West Palm from Annapolis. For the first time in recent years we found the more popular marinas booked up. We were on no particular schedule so we did not try to reserve dockage until that morning.
Southport Marina
Several Georgetown, SC marinas
Beaufort SC downtown marina
Camachee Cove, St Augustine
Booked with transients.
Seems like more people heading south this year. Our boat is 45' so it should have been pretty easy to get dockage. Pleanty of other options and stops but be advised.

Ortega Landing Marina in JAX is 90% full this weeek for the first time ever. I can't say how many are seasonal transients but it's making a lot of us nervous. Rates will probably be going up again. There are plans for another marina in St. Augustine and the City of JAX is trying to work out a big shipyard/marina development for the old yard downtown. These seem to be good signs for the local marine industry. Hopefully a balance can be struck between the developers, local politics and the local boaters.

I believe it'll be the developers getting richer, the politicians getting their piece and the boaters paying for it

I think what happened this year was weather influenced the time to head south more than normal so the movement is more confined time wise. Now, there may be more boats in total too. We came south in September and early October, arriving home on October 8. Other than Capt Bill, we didn't encounter many others moving south at the time. At that time there were plenty of slips everywhere.

On days when it was too windy for offshore the mornings were a long train of boats. All types and sizes from big motor yachts and sailboats to the typical trawlers. After a few hours everyone was sorted out by speed.

We left CT on 10/7 and arrived Stuart, FL on 11/2. We saw more boats heading south this year than we've seen in the last 4 years. We mostly anchor but make 4 Marina stops. By evening all were full and turning boats away. They are; Atlantic Yacht Basin, St. James Plantation, Osprey Marina, and Brunswick Landing Marina. Our destination was Sunset Bay Marina and Anchorage in Stuart, FL. They have a current waiting list of 60 boats for slips. Moorings are first come first served on arrival. Definitely an uptick.

There still seems to be space here in the Gulf Coast, but red tide also is on the rise.....pretty bad fish kill here in Sarasota right now.
