My New Boat!

Hi All, I am new to the forum. I just completed the purchase of Ch'aak, A Transpac Eagle 40 out of Sidney, Vancouver Island BC. I live in Vancouver and am super excited to bring her over next weekend if the weather permits.
Does anyone have a favorite route? I first was going to run up through Gabriola Passage but wondered about just going through Active Pass. Comments appreciated !

When we run to Vancouver from Sidney we run through Active Pass then across the pond.

Our favourite pass was PORLIER. Although, Gabriolla or Active are equally as good. We chose Porlier because you could enjoy a good amount of protected water from Sydney, before heading into the 20 mile Georgia Strait run to English Bay. Be sure to time Porlier Pass correctly.

Congratulations, that didn't take long.
Weather could very well dictate your route.
Any wind this time of year will more often be from the SE so Porlier or Gabriola will be on the beam and Active Pass, you'll be pushed all the way.


If you go Active Pass, get familiar with Sand Heads.

Just remember Sandheads and all the banks around the Fraser go a long ways out into the straight, it can get very shallow in a hurry and lumpy in the shallows.

I can't answer that one because I don't know the boat and how it takes a beam or following sea.

Sand Heads, that's funny because when I mentioned it, I asked myself if I should explain. Well, I don't want to be cheeky but maybe take a look at a chart. That's better than me telling you, then come back if you have any questions.

Congrats! I saw this boat on Yacht world. They are attractive vessels for sure.

You can go through any of the passes: Active, Porlier or Gabriola. Active would be the shortest and most direct route but you are exposed to inclement conditions in South Georgia Strait for longer periods. Hawgwash is correct about Sandheads, but you should be fine with a decent plotter. The ferries through Active are a bigger concern, but if you have AIS, thou will understand whether there is a concern or not. Consider breaking the trip up into two days of travel as you get used to the vessel.

Personally, I take would take the most direct route along the traffic lanes. I'd take the eastern side of the north traffic lane, leaving the large vessels to pass you on your port side.

Ferries would only be a concern at quarter to the hour; that's when the big boys meet mid pass.

You didn't say where in Vancouver you are going? I see North Van on your info. Also, is this your first boat? What I did with my first, I went to Connover Cove on Wallace Island the first night, enjoyed a quiet night at the dock (it will be deserted except for raccoons, keep the doors closed!) to get more of a feel for her and how she handles, toasted the new boat (Congratulations!) then went through Porlier. Its the shortest pass and you can see what the water in the Gulf is like so you can abort if you choose. Go through at slack, if you can, then no surprises.

If you have more time, if you are not in a rush, then go to Bedwell to a mooring or Pirate's Cove on anchor for another night then go through Gabriola. That would still be better than Active Pass for routing.

If you are in a rush, I would still go through Porlier.

I too will be taking my boat to Vancouver from Long Harbour, Saltspring Island next week. I do this frequently. I go Active if time is an issue, as it is 3 miles shorter than going through Porlier (for me, but for you it will be more than 4 miles shorter). I will go Porlier if the tide is against me through Active, as Porlier is a much shorter pass, so less time lost to adverse current. My boat will behave just about as well in the quartering head or following sea on the Porlier run, as it does with the sea right aft or on the nose on the Active run. Pay attention to the ocean bouy reports from Entrance Island and Sand Heads, as they will tell you what is actually happening in Georgia Strait, near Nanaimo and out in the middle. The forecasts are less useful, as they predict what will be the worst conditions in the forecast area, before the next revision. Where we are going will never get those conditions unless there is a full gale blowing, and you won't be out there.

I am planning to leave Long Harbour by 10 AM, on Nov 4th, and travel at 8 knots, so will be exiting Active Pass at 11:30, or Porlier at 12:45 My boat name is Retreat. Call me if you are out at the same time.

Do you go up the river or into Reed Point and how long does it take from say, Georgina or Gossip?

I am returning to my shelter in Coal Harbour. I plan a 5 to 6 hr trip from Long Harbour, so if I go Active pass, 3.5 hrs from Gossip. + or - depends on help or hindrance from tides.

Thanks. Slow boating will be a whole new and relaxing world for me. No Secret Cove or Maple Bay for lunch from Port Moody and that's fine; everything about me is slower now.
