Not quite 9000

Putting the boat to bed for the winter; looks like the old Jimmy will have to wait until next year to turn 9000.

What type of engine do you have?
 
9000 hrs is very easy to achieve on a well cared for diesel engine,especially a Detroit. I would guess that boat has either a 4-71 or a 6-71.

I think the reference to "Jimmy" suggests a 6-71. I've never heard a 4-71 referred to as a "Screamin' Jimmy". Of course I don't get out of the house much...

Just a little 3-71, new in the boat in 1956. Starting to get broken in now. :)

I'm not surprised the engine has lasted that long, but I'm surprised the tach did!

According to the maintenance logs, yes. New external fuel and coolant lines in 1995, new injectors in 2005, new thermostat this year, etc., but the engine has never been apart.

At the end of the next 9000 hrs you might want a visual compression check.

If it stops white exhaust smoke with the coolant at 140F or below , your set for another 9000.

Even DD requires antifreez , the cheap green stuff to be changed out every 3- 5 years or so.
