Has anyone run St Andrews Sound to go outside latleyor is it just local knowledge?

Stay away from the shoals on your port side exiting the inlet. Tow boats make their money over there.

They used to be pretty good at moving the markers., and as noted you keep a little off the greens. It's one of the deeper inlets and bars on the Georgia coast. Thing is if you are heading north you need to exit at close full high tide to avoid having to take the big curve south of the main the channel. If you can mosey through Jeckyll, St Simons can provide an even deeper and more direct route.

If you are heading north through the sound on the ICW and continuing north, do not transit while there is any significant wind is coming from the north as you will take a beating. We took a BIG beating last year moving our boat to Maryland. How bad can it be? We got hit broadside on the starboard beam by what I think was an 8-foot wave which rolled us 30 degrees. Slammed us so hard it sounded like Thor's hammer had smacked the boat.
