Old Furuno Radar timing out...>

This may be an age issue as the Radar is likely as old as the boat. The Magnetron was replaced in 1999!

Anyway, it seems to work fine, but eventually times out requiring a restart. Is this normal? It's mildly annoying as you can imagine. It's an old Furuno 1800...

Thanks George...By timing out, I mean it shuts down with no input by me...
It might be a "feature"...who knows!

I really should upgrade it and I suspect they'll tell me the same.. I've deep sixed most of the other antique electronics that were on the boat when I bought it..

BTW, we're planning a trip to New Bern in the next few weeks. Docking rec's?

"Timeing Out" Is the shutdown at some consistent time or is it random?

I have no idea about your unit but one thing that comes to mind is the actual On/Off switch or push button. They can wear and they will do exactly that. I had my old desktop computer start doing that. New switch, problem gone.
Push the button for the restart and it worked but at some random time the m/c qould die. Took me a while to figure it out.

It may be worth at least exploring rather than tossing what might be an other wise serviceable m/c unless you simply want it gone

Some of the newer-than-yours furunos' had an "Economy" mode which shut everything down on a timer except the magnetron, but they had an indicator led to let you know you were in that mode. I don't think it would become active in the transmit mode, only in standby mode.
Does your unit do a full timed startup on re-start or is it ready right away?
If its a full timed start-up then my guess is the power is being interrupted by a bad connection that heats up over time, dropping the voltage until the unit shuts down. Could be external wiring or internal to the unit. I would power the unit with test leads from a known good power source to see if the behavior disappears.
