Sooting around intake

Can anyone tell me what might cause sooting around the area of the intake manifolds? It's a Cummins V-504-M V8 Diesel.
I've tried to include a picture, however no luck.

An exhaust leak. The engine pulls a LOT of air into the intake. Search for a bad exhaust gasket?

Actually check everything up to and including the wet elbow. Not just the engine gaskets.
Mine was leaking at the elbow joint. Soot everywhere.

I'll fourth the exhaust leak.
At for adding you must be in advanced mode.
Then at the bottom find manage attachments.
Tis a bit awkward at times but does work.

Depending on pic size/resolution upload can take a little time so be patient. I find 3 pics is the max, exceed that I get strange messages and no upload.
