What's up with the giant smokestack? Do they all have that?

I know what you're thinking, Bill. You could stick the dry stack back in the corner and use it for heat on those chilly days. Yeah, with your hull black, it really sets it off!:thumb::thumb:

I like the dark hull though!

It looks like it was made from leftover parts

A real trawler!:

Sorry that is not a trawler in any sense. It's basically a crew boat but the A frame aft and no fishing gear gives it away as a research boat.

These two are in Sidney tonight.
The first one is from down under, lads.
In the link are videos of her crossing the Pacific, pretty neat.
Northwest Passage 2014: A Unique Opportunity - PFB-64 M/V IRON LADY for sale asking US$ 3,100,000 - AFFORDABILITY ALTERNATIVE BELOW?

Snoop...well, just another character.

Its hard to see $3m in a second hand Dashew: very basic utilitarian fit out, exterior not even painted.

Most new 60 single engine' motorboats are £2m or less; there must be a special naval architects ' premium' of £1m. Lol!

When a Dashew is the best looking of a group of boats that group is a bit south of average. TAD's offering isn't even above average in looks. I was supprized he posted it. Nice big trawler yes but she ain't boat porn. And as much as I like Albin 25's they ain't boat porn either.

If I had couple million dollars to spend frivolously:

It would be great fun to purchase about ten used and fully complemented, live-aboard boats of different brands (Hatteras, Bertram, GB, Tollycraft, OA - to name a few)... all in good condition and in the 34' to 50' range.

Then take a couple years of testing (documenting) their actual handling capabilities in some truly rough water off shore. I'm betting that although none of the boats I herein mention have any really long range capabilities (say 2500 miles and above) that all or nearly all have the ability to do 500 +/- mile jaunts as well as to withstand a really good pounding in rough waters when Captained by a knowledgeable handler who feels the boat, knows the boat, and can master the boat's control-nuances during times of high-wind wave condition stress.

Reason I mention this: There is no need to own a $3M boat and cruise the world to be safe in a boat and to have great years of boating pleasures. Boats I portray above would be in the $40K to $190K range. Affordable for many families to own and enjoy.

If per chance... anyone wants to cruise across the high seas then $3M is not a bad price for the boat. But, if someone wants to cruise in other areas of distant foreign seas there is such a thing as "boat transport" where their $40K to $190K can be delivered by ocean liner at fraction of the cost for owning and maintaining a $3M + ocean crossing vessel.

Busy Saturday....

Hobbit looks for a spot to anchor.....

While Lazee Gal enjoys lunch....

LazieGal.jpg

Hobbit is a Weston Farmer design, originally called All Ten B and included in the first edition of Voyaging Under Power. She's 57' x 17' x 5'8" draft, aluminum construction by Palmer Johnson of Michigan and launched in 1968.

Lazee Gal was designed by Thornton Grenfell, built under his direction, and launched in 1952. She's about 60' x 15'..

TAD,
Now we're back on track!
Lazee Gal didn't do herself any favors w that enlarged window aft but it's fly stuff re the overall. But if I was aboard the boat I'd probably really like the windows.

Sure like the fwd deck rails and anchor crane.
That's a really long boat ... or perhaps it ljust ooks long due to high aspect ratio.

I think Ol Lazee Gal was for sale a while back, not sure if she ever changed hands though.

Eric-
I wonder if the profile of the aft window was actually an attempt to portray the profile of the ship. Of course without any hard corners- for lack of a better word. If so, there in lies the problem IMHO. Great lines for sure.
Boy do I love the canoe stern on the first ship!!

Couple O' Beaut Boats!

Agreed about Hobbit and Lazee Gal. Seen Lazee Gal many times in Howe Sound. Saw Hobbit last weekend. The photos appear to be in Silva Bay oddly enough.

I also like Snoop and used to see her around Secret Cove and Pender Harbour many years ago. Wondered where she went as I really like her looks.

Here is one I enjoy. I see the Patricia S around a lot working the South Sound. She has the distinction of one sinking at the dock.

Here's what happens when your repair bill is higher than the value of your boat.

Thanks. Here is a photo of another "Badger". This was a snap that I found in my father's things. This was his fathers sailboat on Lake Ontario, circa 1940.

That picture of Snoop I posted back a bit on the 22nd was in Sidney, so she is still around. She was gone the next day.

Hecate Ranger on another day.....

Wooden boats need to be strong and flexible here in BC. Hecate Ranger on Datum Rock (Chatham Sound) in 1979. They had just gotten underway towing a barge, when they hit, more or less at high water, 5:00 in the morning. Picture was taken as the tide was coming back up, late afternoon. They've lifted her a bit here, max heel was about 45 degrees, scary! Luckily this happened close to Prince Rupert. A barge with crane arrived in the afternoon to lift as she was heeled so far over. Tide came in and they got underway with the tow about 6:30 that evening, making no water!
