Iam looking for an information source on insurance for a 40 ft 1999 trawler..coastal cruising/ Bahamas ....

Try IMIS in Annapolis, they were always helpful for us.

For non liveaboard...try Sea Insure through Sea Tow...my insurance guy sits on the next desk over and the main reason I don't have Sea Insure...they didn't do liveaboards when I applied.


Make sure you really compare though...to many claim better rates but are apples to oranges on coverage rather than across the board line item by line item.

Ask boat brokers in your town who the go-to insurance guy is. In our town, there is one guy that many use. Not only sells the policies, but can answer any question and sort out issues. Nice to have someone local.

I forgot for the moment but we do have a highly respected insurance broker right in our ranks...he is cool to answer specific questions...or set you up....your call...

Peter helped me get insurance that allowed me to bring my KK54 down from Alaska to California in late March. Not every underwriter will cover that!

And I'm about to contact him again with some changes I'd like to make to my policy.

+2 For Peter, great to work with! Got over 8 quotes and went over pros and cons with each. Ultimately decided on one of the better coverage companies with great coverage. Good luck!

Geico insures liveaboards and will include the Bahamas if the boat is a twin screw. We have Geico, but when we go to the Bahamas we will have to make other arrangements since we are a single.

Interesting- and a bit odd. I've never heard of a requirement for a vessel to have twin screws for a transit- that logic would preclude sailboats from traveling to the Bahamas. I'd be digging into the policy wording for other similar "gotchas".

If you have a yacht and insure it with a general lines company like Geico, ask Peter Ricks (Pau Hana) for quotes and a comparison of coverages with your current Geico policy. You may find that you do not have the right policy for your needs. Better to find out and fix that now than to find out when filing a claim that you have the wrong policy/provider.
