So were ours. The metal surrounds were not open in the back like most so no light came in. Making it hard to read the levels. The light strips I got came from Home Depot. While the light set comes with a transformer/dimmer they are 12v LEDs. And LEDs are potted in plastic and the strip is adhesive backed.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. We marked the tube in one hundred gallon increments as we filled it as well.
