Japanese fishing boats in Mitsuhama, Japan. Looks like they have added length to the bow to get more waterline length so they can go faster?

I wonder what the piping is for. Looks like 2" or 3" steel pipe extending out above the railings with another piece stored to attach via coupling.

Maybe they are bringing drill pipe to a slooowww rig little at a time.

I imagine an additional benefit would be better handling while punching through steep, locally generated waves...by getting lift at the bottom of the wave instead of waiting for the bow sections above the waterline to meet the oncoming waves with force.

There's many days on our channel where spray goes over the pilothouse while traveling into the wind...me-thinks those wave piercer add-ons would smooth the ride out considerably.
