Im trying to budget fuel for a 3406 Cat , single screw, 210 hp, 3 blade, 38 ft trawler, semi displacement, 30,000 lb hull. 8 knots. Thanks for your imput.

We have a Cat 3406 but rated at 540hp. However, our vessel is*a bit*heavier displacement (35,000lbs)*and quite a bit*longer (53ft), and our consumption at hull speed (9.2kn) is 4.7 gals/hour or 18 liters/hour.

*I suggest you join boatdiesel.com ($25) and use the prop/power calculator on the website. You enter all the parameters and it will tell you the fuel consumption at a range of speeds.

Cheers,

8K is too high a cruising speed for any economy in a 38 ft boat , 6K would be far better.

Yes you will be able to go 8K , but the fuel burn may well be half or 1/3 at the slower speed.

And of course using the engine at its best fuel flow / power rating 210 hp will probably be 15GPH and a thrilling 15K.
