Good story, great outcome! This is a reminder for us all to examine our safety equipment and seriously consider the addition of an AED on your boat if you, even occasionally, cruise more than a few miles from immediate ALS help.

Before buying an AED, make sure you are trained in its use. Many people think it will shock a stopped heart back to beating, but they are specifically for shocking an abnormal life threatening arrhythmia back to a normal beat. In fact, when the AED senses no heartbeat it will not administer a shock. Nonetheless, it would be good to have one if you ever need it.
Not quite accurate...at least not in my experience. Ventricular fibrillation will trigger a shock on my AED's; V-fib produces no heartbeat.
