Many years ago, maybe my 3rd year of boating, I left my dinghy ashore at a small town on the Hudson River. Luckily for me I tied it well, because after our 1 1/2 hour jaunt in town, I came back to a half full dinghy as the tide was coming in.
It was a good lesson to learn for sure.
