Magnum ME-BMK instructions page 3 calls for a short ~18" battery cable to connect shunt to battery negative.

How practical is this for a large battery bank made up of two boxes with 4 and 6 batteries? How important is the 18" length? How much longer can it be?

Shorter the better, but nothing sacred about the 18" length. Standard rules for amperage and conductor dia and length apply.
 
The problem is because shunts work by measuring very small voltages. There is voltage loss in all cables. The further from the battery the greater the error, but if your cables are sized well, the error shouldn't be too big. Also the error will be less at smaller current draw.

Thanks! Yes. No free lunch. I've got large cables, AWG 2/0. We will see what the 'trcian suggests.
