Trucking a 35' CHB Ponderosa

Someone out here has shipped a CHB Ponderosa! Who are you? I am wanting to ship mine from Portland Oregon to Minnesota. I do not want to take off the huge flybridge but will take down the aft roof. Who's done it? What was you height? Help!

We trucked our GB36 from Alameda, CA to Tacoma, WA where it was offloaded into a yard for some work we wanted done. We then took the boat on its own bottom from Tacoma to Bellingham.

The truck journey took two days, required a pilot car, and in 1998 cost $4,000. The marine trucking company we used, Associated, told us that of the GB line, the GB36 was the largest model that could be trucked in the western US without removing the flying bridge. Back east where bridge clearances can be lower due to an older road system, the flying bridge often has to come off depending on the route.

While the flying bridge did not have to come off, everything else did: mast, boom, bimini, antennas, and venturi panels. Our radar antenna is mounted on the flying bridge face so that made removing the mast a whole lot easier.

My wife and I put everything back on after the boat had been offloaded and blocked in the yard in Tacoma.

Any idea how high the boat was when it was on the trailer?

No, sorry. Associated used a trailer that dropped the forefoot of the hull almost to the pavement which reduced tha air draft by a fair amount. I would think if you called a marine trucking company they would be able to tell you the on-trailer heights of the more popular production boats like a CHB.

We had our 44' OA hauled from Austin Texas to Green Bay some years back. Left the flybridge attached...load was 15'6"...well over the 13'10" that truckers look for. Used a pole truck as the escort. Slightlly circuitous route...a few extra bucks, but still less costly overall than removing and replacing the FB. By the way, there's a very well respected Mom and Pop hauler in Menominee, Michigan...M&B Yacht transport ( believe is the name) who haul for Cruisers, Carver, and Marquis factories as well as others. Nice people, nice equipment (no affiliation...I used someone else who I would not endorse).

When I shipped from Virginia to Washington State, the max height the shipper would accept was 14'. Flat rate with all permits, insurance, and other requirements handled was $10,000. (30' length, 18,000 lbs, and under 14').

Who was the shipper?

Associated Boat Transport in Marysville, Wa. I am not sure they are still in business, and I am sure not everyone had as happy an experience as I did. For me, it was 100% satisfaction. No down sides...

Speaking of shippers....a couple of weeks ago I just happened to be driving through the parking lot at the Cruisers Yacht facility in Oconto, Wisconsin when this transporter pulls out of their fenced area carrying a new Cantius 45. The escort pick up truck was right behind the semi, so I ask the driver where the boat was headed...the Miami boat show, says he. Then I followed the rig out of town. What caught my eye is that most of the running lights on one side of the trailer were burned out, and the tail and brake lights on the other side were completely inop. Sloppy operator with a not so well-kept trailer. Joule Transport...Florida based, I believe. Not impressed.

I own a 54 foot yacht hauling trailer and a Freightliner FLD120 tractor but only haul for myself. I know most of the outfits that do this and most are pretty shadey. The worst ones are the brokers that only sell, then find a hauler. I would call Joe at Anchors Away, he is the very best.

We still may. It depends on how far along we are in getting things ready. Right now its a go. Now find someone who has hauled a boat like mine!
