Door locks - Premature damage by rust

Greetings folks

My boat has been on water since June/14. Yet, I am already looking for new door locks as mine are stuck inside. My doors are close to 1 ½” thick and I cannot find locks from a reliable brand here in Brazil. As my sister is going to Miami soon, I would like to know from you where she can get good quality door locks to replace mine.

I can't speak to Miami. But in Fort Lauderdale this is the go to place for things like that.

If your sister does go there make sure she gets good directions from them. Because while the building is not to hard to find, there are no signs what so ever indicating what business is located there.

It would help if you posted pix and model numbers of what you need to replace.


Are they surface mount or inset into wood doors?

If these are swinging doors Perco makes marine door locks and latches that are pretty basic but hold up in a marine environment. Have you tried cleaning what you have and lubing with something like CorrosionX?

I have done quite a lot but it seems useless.
The door is 1 1/2" thick. Haven't find a perco for that size.

Simple fix, Porty!! Take it back to the builder and demand he fix them under warranty!!

If I was going to Miami looking for a friend in the marine parts business, I'd head to Hopkins-Carter and see Parks for good assistance and advice.

Al, Portuguese was the builder…

Port, for what it's worth, I have found locks with keys and the marine environment are not happy bedmates. I use a round type stainless heavy duty padlock on the main access (usually cockpit) door, and to lock doors when you are inside, simple strong hooks and eyes, (again stainless), are also rust and foolproof.

that looks to be a good quality lock. Are you sure that it is just not misaligned??


I know I have seen that lock somewhere, is it an European product??

Send a picture to Izerwaren. If anybody might know what brand it is they should.

Locks are to keep honest people honest. Just appearance of one should be enough - unless a real thief(s) joins in... then locks are useless, short of a bank vault. LOL

IMHO :When away from boat, have locks showing as locked... keep none actually locked unless inside asleep... then, the thief's break-in should wake me soon enough to take care of matters, i.e. dead thief!

When away from boat I leave it unlocked. That way my ins co pays for lost items and not damaged door/window/hatch parts that take too much time to fix and seldom come back to original condition.

Of course, we do dock in gated, patrolled area of a nice marina. Thief that gets by that, or who may sidled up at night in small boat... is not going to care if doors are locked. They'll just break-in. If door is open when they try it... less damage for sure is the result!

This Perko is for 1 3/8" thick door. You could rout out 1/16" on either side of door and it would fit?

Try Trioving Locks. These are good to 70mm thick.

since that is a virtually new lock. I really think it needs to be opened up to investigate what is wrong. Cleaning and some grease may be all that is needed. I disagree that locks don't work on boats. Yours is covered by the top and certainly not subject to salt spray. Perhaps a little water from rain or washing. Makes no sense to me that it would fail so soon.

Good quality locks work on boats. IMHO, they should be locked while aboard and asleep so that an errant intruder would be heard while working at it to gain entry. Then appropriate dealings could be immediately administered to the intruder.

No lock works if a thief wants in while no one is aboard or near by. Therefore, it is my premise, that while away from boat locks should be made to "look locked", but not really locked. So the thief does not wreck door, window, hatch, etc... while gaining entry to steal the same items whether door was locked or not!

I took them out, spread them in small pieces, wash them in good WD40, them diesel, them liquid vaseline, them assembled them and filled them with blue grease. I wonder what will happen now.

They are a Brazilian domestic brand claiming to be SS.
