On the water...

Started out at 50 degrees at 0600, got up to 82 degrees by noon. A nice day on the water in San Diego Bay.

Sleep in till 9 am, and San Diego area has some great weather. Daughter worked in Carlsbad, and we would spend a month or two in the winter there. I get up by 6, so it was chilly, but by 9, it was beautiful. Alas, spending this winter in NW. Go HAWKS!

Sturgeon Fishing by the Mothball Fleet



Jenny's first fish at 7 ft 0 in (84 in) and approx 180 lbs

Looks like Suisin Bay. Thought they got rid of all those rust buckets.

There are twelve ships remaining in the Suisun Bay reserve fleet. No change for the last ten months. Compared to hundreds in times past. The most notable to leave in recent years is battleship USS Iowa.

Mark, do you know why the ships are brought all the way to Texas to be scrapped, seems they'll wind up in China anyway? Is there a law against military surplus going abroad?

Went out today for a couple hour romp to get Badger's juices flowing and caught three crab. Not one other boat out there

Clueless on any China connection. Presume scrapping in Texas even with the added cost of towing transcontinental is more cost effective than doing it on the West Coast.

Oops...keeping in spirit with the OP, today was 2C (35.5F) with intermittent showers. Saw bugs flying around and a small flock of geese the other day; not quite spring yet, but it's trying!

Wifey B: Wow....I love love love it. I'm not much of a fisherwoman but we introduced a 19 yo to it recently and omg she's fallen in love with it. And on her second time ever fishing, she caught a blue marlin out of Cabo San Lucas. 300 lbs. Took 2 1/2 hours. Refused help. I'm not sure she'll ever come down from the high. As she eased it back into the water, she spoke to it and kissed it good bye.

I can't freaking imagine being Jenny's age and my first fish 180 lbs. But I thank you for her for giving her that opportunity. My first fish was probably a 5" Bluegill...and I was 22 years old.

I had questions about it, and as if by magic this article by Workboat magazine appeaared in my inbox today, I do subscribe to Workboat.
The ship featured was towed to TX via the Straights of Magellan!
