The 444/544 had great racing chops. Art Reilly in his P1800 was a SCCA big time winner in class and on the rules committee with guys like Hap Sharp. The list of era cars (Porsches, Cortina, Mustangs, Camaros) that the old tank design Volvos beat in hill climbs, road tracks, Sebring and Daytona is startling.

When the family started growing out went the race worthy 122 and Sunbeam Tiger and in came the family oriented 142. The 142 was the only Volvo I dinged up when it went the wrong way over a cattle guard with a carload of friends. Changed a tire and carried on.

Since we are on the topic of boats and cars, I'm sure everyone knows of Taylor Made Products? The people who make our fenders and a myriad of other marine products? I didn't know it, but they used to also own CruiseAir, MarineAir, and Sealand.

Well, last year through a series of circumstances I got to know Jim Taylor, now the senior guy in the family business. It turns out he's a car buff too, and I got a tour of his private collection. There are about 100 cars, and the really cool thing is that every one of them is registered and gets driven. Not a lot, but they get them all our for exercise.

And he's got a great sense of humor too. The Rolls was not worth restoring, so he marked it off in a grid and is creating a quilt-car. Anyone can stake out a grid and come back and paint anything they want in their space. You can see my patch. Now I just need to get my wife to paint a picture of our boat.....

Larry that's a good one. Dink looks odd in the desert though.


I think that Rolls is a Cloud. That's what I want.
Would need to sell Willy to get one though. They have an "F head 6cyl" engine ... overhead intake and side exhaust valve .... as in flat head.

Well, I suppose you could call it the W-30 of automobiles, although I do seem to remember a W-30 from Olds in the late 60's, early 70's. Oh yeah, here's one. Remembered for its speed but hardly for economy. 442 W-30, 400/350

No .. Not diesel. Don't want diesel in my car. Drove one and it's amazing .... but the "TSI" gas 1.8 Jetta is even more amazing. You actually need to look at the tach to see if it's running. And I drove it on the freeway for a mile or so in 3rd gear. Blows the doors of my wife's 2000 Golf w a turbo 1.8. The TSI has no exhaust manifold. Exhaust all in the head (alum) and the turbo bolts right onto the alum head. No premium fuel required .. probably due to the better cooling. One downside is some turbo lag that the Golf dosn't have. Interestingly diesel is almost a dollar more a gallon now.

I really like my Mitsubishi diesel in my boat but will pass on diesel for a car.

Nice .... and I have a soft spot for Yellow. That one reminds me of my 67 400 Pontiac that I sold 12 years ago. I'm partial to old GM iron. My favorite is 46 to 48 Buick, Olds or Cadillac "sedanette" (fastback). Only the body shared by all three of those makes.

I can see Marin up there w a big hat on gon'n down the road shoo'in people out of the way. I like Willy better but I'm really biased. Spending some time on her lately .. is generating newborn bonding.

Larry--We never drive our boat from the flying bridge so it stands to reason we wouldn't drive that Land Rover 110 from it, either. I like the window treatment. For dusty, off-pavement use, sliding windows are much better than roll-down windows. Don't like the pimpmobile wheels, though.

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe those window frames are holding up the entire flybridge.

Those photoshopped window frames are from virtual chrome-nickel alloy, strong enough to support a tuna tower as well.

The front windows slant the wrong way!

Ok, so we have a Nordic Tug, but no Subaru (although I'll admit to having considered a WRX several times over the past few years). So, what do we drive (we live in the city and get by with one car)?

I'll give some hints: 427 ft lbs of torque, 0-60 in just over 5 seconds, but better than 36 MPG on the highway . . .

Over the holidays we did a 500 mile trip on one tank of fuel (16 gals),
averaging close to 80 mph on the highway . . .

Ghost? Anyone?

Bingo! Love the car, but now that she is out of warranty/free maintenance, we are on the hunt (I'll be first to admit that these things are expensive and a PIA to maintain). Wish they still imported this engine in the 3 series. Not sure what will come next.
