Just stating what I use, not what he should use, just a general data point and not sure down right dangerous, long before AIS a good radar, paper chart and a pair of eyes could keep you out of the way.
Nice for a general idea, but far from real time and comprehensive. Dangerous for the OP's application.

iSailor requires a wi-fi connectable AIS receiver or transponder, BTW.

Our Vesper XB-8000 AIS has wifi for use with their app but is supposedly suppose to work with INavX but have never tried myself.

Boat Beacon - Real time Marine Traffic and Ship Finder AIS
I have used boatbeacon for a couple of years now. It is real time, gives me another tool when transiting a busy fairway, as I now have CPA for all of the big commercial traffic and can plan my own course accordingly. Some of the fishboats or tugs are not big enough for AIS to be mandatory, so you still need to use other means of estimating their course and speed, but this app takes the work out of that estimation for most of the big traffic.
