Hendo's Randall 35 Cray Boat complete rebuild, Perth, Western Australia

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Starting on the helm. Looks more like a church pew or musical organ atm but it'll come together. Not bad considering all I've been working off is a pic off the net ?

I've got to finish of the cupboard in the bottom, add 30mm to the side panels to make it 50mm thick and then I can epoxy and glass tape it up before fairing and sanding etc etc etc.

The reason for the cut out in the back is so it will hook over and sit on top of the toilet wall and ceiling.

Hendo VERY nice mate!!!:thumb::thumb:

What are you installing gauge and electronics wise?

Btw I would offset the wheel so at least one half of your gauges/electronics aren't blocked also I would imagine having the wheel closer to the throttles would help when in close quarters so you can peep your head out the side window and still have control of the boat. Just my .02.

Cheers mate.
I've got Faria Tacho, oil press, water temp, fuel lvl, batt gauges.

I don't have a GPS chart-plotter or a fish finder yet but am looking at the 2 of the Lowrance HDS-12's. Have you got any suggestions?

In the bottom panel, I will have the CD player, the steering wheel and a UHF and HF radios. Then the next panel will have the condra switches. The next panel wil have the 2 HDS-12's or similar, the next panel will house the gauges, the next panel will be the top that will house compass and maybe somewhere to put my beers

She's a bit bare ATM as I don't have much in way of electronic toys yet but should fill out once I put everything in. ImageUploadedByTrawler Forum1412771454.411557.jpg

Personally I'd go off center but that just me. Jen and I have already decided our next boat will have a double helm seat or side by side chairs, we do everything together equally when it comes to boating.

If check out Garmin, 840xs, and the 1040xs. We're putting in a 840xs on the FB this week. Not a super fan of Lowrance.

Ok I'll have a look at the Garmins. How come you're off Lowrance? I've only ever owned a HDS-5 and was ok in the go fast I suppose. Kind of a generic std one. I want one that is more in depth and specialised.

I probably sounds silly but I want the cursor on the chartplotter to have a line that shows direction instead of a flashing dot of the actual location.

Saw it on wicked tuna but couldn't see what brand it was

Yeah hope so mate. Flic was really keen on the double width seat so we can both sit up front so I wanted a nice wide helm.

The jury is still out on whether or not the wheel should be centred or to the right.

What's ur thoughts Craigo?

Matt, is your engine right or left rotation? If rotating so when in reverse the boat will back to starboard, the helm located on the starboard side will give you good sight and control when docking. That is my preferred set up. Of course with a center line helm either way works.

Ah I see what you mean, I'll have to check and see later today when I'm at the boat.

I just don't like API in the lowrances, counter intuitive IMO.

Mate what's the advantage of have two identical units side by side like this? Is it so one is a chart plotter and one as a fish finder?

She a Lefty mate. The helm was always going to be on the stbd side of AXE. I was more so going to push the steering wheel to the right of the helm itself opening up the double helm seating to enable Flic to sit up front with me. If the wheel was in the middle I'd be semi leaning over Flic to steer. If I push the wheel to the right, I will be sitting with my princess and will have the wheel into the of me too ImageUploadedByTrawler Forum1412776038.178667.jpg

Yeah cool. What set up do you have?

Basically you can have two seprate things being displayed at once wheter it be the fishfinder, chart, radar, and many other things. Plus you have redundancy.

Ok cool. I like that 840XS/1040XS. They are a sexy unit! Thanks for giving me the heads up on those units.

Our main setup is:
PH- Simrad RA53 standalone 6kw radar w/4 foot open array.
Simrad GB-40( Not super fond of it) with Broadband Radar.
VEI Nav comp running an early version of Windows XP with Nobletec Adimral
^ Soon to be replaced.
Garmin 741xs ( Main plotter)

Flybridge-
Northstar 6000i (Being replaced this week w/ a Garmin 840xs)
Garmin 741xs

I really love the Garmin's they're great simple intuitive units, i also like their charts although they're proprietary. I would check out the Bluechart App for the Ipad and check the chart coverage for your area. Mine was about $30 USD and it gives you an idea of what their charts are like. ( Basically the same thing)

If I had pick another i would take a close look at Furuno and their MFD series they look promising. Also there're ability to seamlessly interface with MaxSea (PC Chart-plotting program).

Garmin does have a line extending from the "boat" forward, showing you exactly what you are about to hit....

Here's some pics. It allows you to choose how long you want the line and also whether you want it to be SOG or COG.

Ah yep. Lovely. Thanks for that. How come you're showing other boats in red? Is that the radar function?

That's the AIS, they're red because their within' (I think) a 1NM radius and could have a possible collision course.

Ah. Gees you got all the gear! I have much to learn from you :)

Had a bit more of a fiddle with the helm this arvo. That's pretty much the end of the construction. I have a bit of fine tuning with the router and sander but should have her glassed, epoxied and filleted sometime over the weekend.

Going out for a fish from 04:00 hrs on Saturday morning. It's the last weekend before the season for the Demersal Fishing Ban kicks in so Flic and I are going to have a bash of the big boys swimming in the deep blue until around 12:00ish. It Will be great getting on a boat that floats and runs on water and not on a hardstand out the back of some blokes house LOL ... Might give us the much needed push in the second half of this project and get AXE over the line before the deadline kicks in.

For any fishos, the below link explains the Demersal Ban

http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Fishing-a...-Coast-Bioregion/Pages/Seasonal-Closures.aspx

Today was a bit hectic. We had a fire at work onboard a livestock vessel at berth 1 today. I took my plate and some cutlery up there in hopes of some roast lamb but unfortunately there was no livestock onboard at the time of the fire. Lol all jokes aside, it was madness. Police, Customs, Firies, Ambos everywhere, ships crew not speaking a word of English, fire burning the accommodation block, helicopters, media bla bla bla.

Below link has a video and the story. It's been a bad couple of months at work for my Department. First a vessel snaps it's mooring ropes during a storm and crashes into a train bridge and now this.

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wes...084841551?nk=e61049741fb3ebdd3a413d66ee9a24ac

Anyway that's it's for today ?

Fine looking cabinetry! Good luck at work. TY for links. Cheers! Art

Everytime I hit a stump while building I just think of this guy in far off distant land that is building from scratch without any plans. Than it puts my 21' boat into perspective. Great progress, like the helm. I will however make an observation, maybe you could help me with the picture. It appears you are installing some instruments on the lower shelf at 90 degrees. If your standing it might not be a thing but if you sit and your trying to read those instruments you'll probably have a tough time. If you haven't done it yet before you drill and commit have some fun and take a seat. Play around with placement and hold a wheel in your hands. Make sure the most vital instruments are visible with your hands on your wheel. Make sure sitting and standing you can see what you feel are the most important.
These is one part of the build that is most exciting, for me, as we get a chance to really picture ourselves and the joy.

Ah we have a new bidder. Hello Sir! Welcome and thank you for contributing to my thread. Hope to hear and see you around here more often. That goes to the silent lurkers also. Less lurking and more contributing. Y'all know by now this is a friendly thread so no excuses :) LOL

Now, In relation to your question/observation. Yes and No. The bottom vertical panel will house the power steering, the CD/Radio and UHF and HF radios and maybe the remote for the inverter. Not vision critical items.

I do know what you mean about committing then going ohhhh faaark. That should have gone 50mm to the right. That's pretty much the standard of this build mate so will make a nice change to plan something hahaha. A good example was the discovery of the hull hook and subsequent removal and hull extension HAHA. Ahhhh Good Times!!!

I will defiantly take your tip and have a play and see how it goes before cutting holes ?

Thanks again for your contribution.

Right ... So ... I swung past the AXE on the way home and picked up the routers and epoxy.

The helm has been routered, sanded, glass taped (on the inside faces only) and epoxy soak coated. Tomorrow arvo I'll sand it epoxy fillet the face side only and fill any imperfections, sand and apply another coat of epoxy.

Holy Smokers Matt!!
I see--- Welder Extraordinaire, Master Carpenter, Fiber-Glass Master, Mechanical engineer, Master Cabinet Maker and Budding Designer. Fearless harbor master. You must be about one hundred seventeen years old to have learned all these skills you pull out of your hat. Oh and I got no suggestions, but a lot of appreciation for your craft of boat building. Dreamed one night I was walking around Perth and ran into you,How weird would that be. Don't even know what you look like! You will have stories of your build that will make a sailor proud.
Cheers and good health, happiness to you and yours!

Ha. You're too kind mate, albeit Not too accurate :) ... My skill knowledge was reflective of a 15 year Australian Army career serving in places like Iraq, East Temor, Afgahanistan, Solomon Islands and Pakistan as a Sapper in the 21st engineers core.

What I look like... Well You aren't missing much mate. Picture a smashed pie and there Ya have it lol ... Yeah look if you ever look at coming to Perth, wait until AXE is done then we can take you out and about ? and go fishing. Already have Craigo booked in to do his diving ticket if he and his wife come over!

How'd you get on with that pulley anyway??
