Law enforcement good guys...

Our Oceanside (city-owned marina) water cops are regarded by the cruising community as the most friendly and helpful in Southern California. They will not hesitate to go out and escort a boater in who is unfamiliar with our sometimes dangerous harbor entrance. One time we came into the harbor (not by choice) on a holiday and all the guest slips were taken. They put us into an empty slip and said, "don't worry about it, the boat is in Mexico." We spent a night there last week and started out the breakwater but were stopped by the Harbor Police and who told us the entrance was closed due to an "Iron Man" swim. The Sicilian explained that we were on our way to San Diego (a five hour trip) and they escorted us out of the harbor. These guys could give lessons to some other harbor police about how to treat boaters.

What a great asset the OHP is to the community... too bad the San Diego Harbor Police doesn't take notes on how it should be done....

I seem to have a run in of one kind or another every time I am in SD with SDHP.. the Only H.P I have ever had any issue with!

Let them Know...

Or better yet... let their bosses including the City Council know. You'd be surprised how seldom people take the time to do something like that. The up-side is that the more kudos and value they garnish - the better they are supported (read funding) when things get tight. Benefits all of us boaters.

You bet , the folks I worked for called then Flowers or Onion letters, and expected about 10-1 in favor of onions as unhappy folks will vent more.

As a former Sheriff it meant alot when a positive email, letter or card arrived thanking us when a deputy went above and beyond in the course of their daily work, whether on the road, water or in the jail.

It meant that one of our three core values "commitment to community" was working.

The deputy was always rewarded with a nice letter to his personal file, a new challenge coin, and positive thanks in front of the other deputies at the next staff meeting.

So bottom line those comments and letters do matter I still let employers of people who have gone above and beyond let them know that they have a great staff person when a dock hand or office person does a great job.
