Hi all. I am planning to go to the boat show Thursday or Friday. Getting together last year with a few of the other forumites was fun. Is anybody else planning to go and would like to meet up.
The new format looks interesting but keeping a mobile handy might be good.

John

I`m committed to going late Saturday with a group. This year is different, the exhibition halls are not located adjacent to the marina, due to rebuilding. I think a ferry will operate for transfers between venues. Anyone have more info?

I'm in Bangkok having my chompers realigned:blush:

Be there in spirit.

Ummm, something I should know?

Nah just couldnt resist the emicon showing all the flashers:):)

I spoke to the organizers, the $5 entry after 5pm until 8pm is not offered this year, because the marina, and product display halls, are separate(due to rebuilding the old Exhibition Halls) and connected by a ferry service, incl in ticket price. 3 hours is just not enough time this year.
There will be an OA72 on display. Yours for $3.95M AUD. How does that compare to US pricing?

I'm pleased it is Thailand Andy, and not..well…somewhere else. I have heard a few 'interesting' stories from patients who went elsewhere in Asia for 'competitive' prices, but the Thai standards appear to be excellent. In fact I had a fellow come in the other day, and before getting down to the nitty gritty of what he was there to see me about, he launched into a huge rave about how pleased he was with a whole set of synthetic teeth he had installed, in Bangkok also I think, all mounted permanently into the jaw, and looking a million dollars, but only $6000 compared to the $23,000 he had been quoted here.

A set of teeth, a massage with "happy ending" fly in fly out and still change in the pocket.
Nah still not sure I would do it.
But if it works for you go for it.

A friend has dental work back home in Philippines, done well and much cheaper than here. Not sure they are up to speed on implants. Just had 2 quotes here for one implant, $3500, and $5500! Asian dental work may be fine, but I know some plastic surgery has required serious revision work back here.
Will there be a dentist at the Boat Show? Dozens, probably.

Well, as I sit here and type I have just finished a couple of weeks pretty full on work.

I was pretty nervous of going down this course, so did a lot of research about the pros and cons before venturing forth. This included checking the published infection rates, the qualifications of the specialists, the type of x-rays they use as well as talking to people from Oz who had been through the system.

I was blown away by the way the dental hospital/clinic was run . Seven stories of marble and glass, the operating theatres were immaculate, no doubt about it this was five star stuff.I had three separate planning meeting with various specialists to map out my treatment plan, no up selling just pretty detailed dental discussions and options.

I met a couple of American service personnel at the centre, on leave from Afghanistan, they were recommended by their doctor in the States.

So all up I'm pretty pleased that I have done this, and yes the cost differential is substantial, in my case about $20,000.

Oh, and the local girls up the road at the massage parlour have got to know me pretty well, they do wonderful foot massages, all above the board so to speak, and they ply me with herbal tea. They are all very sweet.

Sorry for the hijack, back to the boat show.

Andy, was the place an organisation with a name beginning with Sea....something..? The way my patient described it sounds very much as you do. He was blown away by the place, and the very up to date equipment. Everything digital, computerised...the works...

It's called BIDC

Stands for Bangkok International Dental Centre.

Gee, it starting to sound like I am spruiking them.

I have just come back from my last foot massage, off home tomorrow. It's been great fun(apart from the drilling)

Andy,
All the best with the choppers.
Are you going to smile like Warnie after this.
Cheers

I am gritting my teeth over this thread drift. I thought this was about the Sydney Boat Show but it would appear we are jawing over something different. I say with tongue in cheek.

OK back to Sydney boat show.
I have recently been looking at renewing my wheelhouse electronics, going away from stand alone plotter etc.
As far as I can see it 3 choices , Raymarine, Furuno and now Garmin.
Furuno expensive in comparison, I know bigger professional base as far as long commercial shipping base but the other 2 are coming ahead in leaps and bounds.

Any one going to Sydney boat show having a look at this equipment care to give me their opinions.
I am actually leaning towards Garmin even though I have always thought of their equipment as small boat stuff.

Cheers

The Lowrance range if getting pretty comprehensive Benn. Nice integrate high def. including broadband radar, GPS, sonar, etc, and their really detailed side-scanning sonar looks really useful. I find their stuff very easy to install and very intuitive to use. Also priced pretty well compared to the others.

Benn, not sure if I`m going to the Show, but a word about Garmin.
I have their basic GPS/Sounders at both helms, they are completely reliable and trouble free.
However, I recommend NOT getting advice from Garmin Sydney. They told me 2 units could work off one transducer,(they cannot), then several staff members gave conflicting advice even criticizing each others advice, then the Manager decided I was lying about receiving their advice(it was on that advice I bought Garmin not Lowrance) and refused to respond, even to my request to return/exchange my GPS/Sounder they had exchanged for the cheaper GPS only version they said would work on the one transponder,(it didn`t and can`t). Only after I detailed the mess to Garmin USA did they become helpful, very helpful. I had to fit a second transducer, which shoots, slightly degraded, thru hull. wasn`t cutting another hole.
GME have a range you may want to consider. My local Whitworths say they get good help from GME whenever they ask, and the GME people I met at the Boat Show are very helpful.
But as I say, the Garmin equipment itself works fine.

Peter,
I have a Lowrance SDS 7" with side scan on my fly fishing centre console but I am looking more at the 12/ 15 " black box type set up with radar and sounder. Most likely 2 screens so that not too much screen splitting.
I have a new top of the range Airmar 2 kw bronze thru hull transducer that I will fit next time at GCCM.
Initially this will be with my Furuno sounder but eventually I hope via the black box to my new screens on the dash.
I have been dealing with Tony at EMS @ GCCM, they are agents for all 3 brands but am interested in input from guys on the forum to back up some of my own decisions.

Cheers

You might consider a PC based Nav setup. Inside your helm area you would not need waterproof & daylight viewable screens ie very expensive ones in large sizes.

I'm using Nobeltec Trident, and Aquabelle has MaxSea Explorer. They are now part of the same French company, in turn half owned by Furuno and the software is virtually identical other than for logos. So both brands take Furuno DRS radar's. Its nice having a 24" screen for Nav, and of course easy to add a second screen if you want to display IP camera's or engine feeds. I would think to give 48V to the radar you need either one of the Furuno MFD's or a separate 48V power supply. The radar signal etc is just a Cat5 ethernet cable so easy to plug into the PC.

The software came with two licenses, so I have a desktop PC with the big screen on when running, and to save power use a laptop 13" for anchor watch. Easy to run both at the same time also. So can have split screen Nav on the 24" screen and radar on the laptop. I was going to attach some schematics, but they have graphic icons in them and its a 23MB file, so no dice. These are still a work in progress, but PM me your email and I can try sending a page at a time. Or let me know if you are in Brissy soon. I'm at Dockside now. The idea is to show what is connected where and what the bits look like, to make it easy for guest crew to understand the setup. These schematics complement, not replace, the CAD drawings I have for the boat systems.

OK, I can add a couple of the pages as the file size is OK.

Brian,
I am running a PC based system using Nobeltec Trident and have used PC based systems on Tidahapah since 1995.
I am upgrading (!!!) as I think the newer systems are better on smaller boats , they have come a long way.
I introduced our tanker fleet to PC based systems after I had my own up and running on Tidahapah, in those days I was running C Plot from Trymax , I then went to Tsunami, ( in my opinion was the best system going) and after they discontinued support for cruising systems changed over to Nobeltec about 8 years ago.
With the intergrated systems I just feel they set up a bit better in the smaller space I have.
This is going to be a work in progress and probably will not come to fruition until after I return from Tassie next year.
Yes I must have a better look at your system and see how you have it set up.
I am heading down to Brisbane tomorrow and flying north on Sunday.
If I get a chance I will ring you and have a quick visit if that is OK.
Will probably talk tomorrow.

Cheers

I'll be down at the boat for a lot of the day I expect.... Be ready for a coffee break whenever is convenient.

Not quite sure where you want to end up with the 'integrated system'? eg I control the Furuno radar from within Trident, which seems pretty integrated to me.

Benn: I have a full Furuno NN3D install, from my 2009 re-fit. Service and support OUT OF THE USA is superb....poor locally in my experience. That aside, if I were doing it all again today, I'd go Garmin in a heartbeat. Their technology has jumped ahead of Furuno; the Australian charts & satellite imagery are better; the pricing is very attractive relative to Furuno. I cannot speak to local service/support. Interestingly, the couple who run the ActiveCaptain crowd-sourcing site -- and who must be two of the most tech savvy AND pragmatic users around -- recently chose Garmin.

Back to the Boat Show: I went yesterday (Friday) with the Admiral in tow. On-water boat display much reduced in size/number of boats, but we still enjoyed seeing the GB 54 (favourite layout/styling); a Maritimo 50 (have to admire the stylish fitout, though not to our personal taste); the Greenline 48 (weird drive technology, attractive fitout). Ferry trip from Darling Harbour to Glebe via Captain Cook Cruises operating at dead idle frustratingly slow, but at least the services are frequent. Display hall at Glebe Island is huge but not as well laid out as at old Convention Centre, with the various booths more scattered between acres of trailer boats which were of no interest to us. Some big exhibitors at Sanctuary Cove still missing from Sydney, like Dometic & BLA...so no air con or refrigeration to see (seems odd at a boat show). Crowds on Friday were a good size from a visitor perspective, ie easily tolerable. Exhibitors told us numbers were really poor Thursday and they were happy to see so many more people Friday. Weather forecast not great for this weekend, will be interesting to see how it all goes.

Wow, if Sydney is missing exhibitors compared to Sanctuary Cove then it would be a disappointing event. I wonder which Australian show has the best industry support?

Did you check out the plastic/fake teak caprails on the Fleming?

We are going today, eta midday. Weather here is cool but fine, forecast to stay that way all day. I`ve a few things circled to check out, not planning on getting the cheque(check) book out though.

Quick BoatShow report. I really just looked at Integrity 380, Kadey Krogen 48, Symbol 50. Last 2 in a different class to the Integrity, the KK superior and near 2x the price of the Symbol, accommodation/features similar, clearly one is an ocean crosser, the other a coastal cruiser. That said, the Integrity 380 FB seems good value for $.
The build quality and "solidity" of the KK is obvious, I see why our US friends admire them, and applaud the Dauntless voyage. I met Larry Polster of KK, their first exhibiting in Sydney, they will be in Brisbane with an older used 42ft boat for sale too, around 200K. He knew about Dauntless, said there is another KK42 crossing the Pacific. Very proud he was too.
