I did not know it went back that far. And here I was thinking I was in early when one of the social outcast, geek, white lab coat guys at my company said, "Come to my office, I have something cool to show you." He had what looked like a radar image of a developing hurricane from NOAA up on his Apple machine (a rare Apple user in the corporation). I think he was running Mosaic or maybe, Netscape. But it was the coolest thing ever and, of course, then I had to buy a computer.

I thought Al Gore invented the Internet!

That's a good overveiw, and Tim Lee is a very credible source. I got into it on about page 4 via Bell Labs who were tied in from very early on.
