I agree its not the same America that we grew up in. The world has become a more dangerous place.

Some places in the world are more dangerous than 50 years ago. America is not one of those places. We're much safer now than any period in my lifetime.

I doubt we're any safer than before. The dangers are different, and they often times come from within.

And if I were a terrorist, I'd pick out the least suspicious place to cause trouble. A place full of hippies and baby boomers, and bikini clad (or clad-less) starlets. Expect the unexpected where you least expect it.

BL, I'm not sure that using figures from the CDC, which compares death rates from diseases) is appropriate to a discussion of terrorist threats.

The danger to many comes not from terrorists, but from people in your own community, and gun control is not the answer as we saw in Chicago this past holiday weekend. Thirteen people were killed and 58 wounded in Chicago from gun violence.

And those numbers are from a city that is among the strictest in the nation on gun ownership. Yet Rahm Emanuel, everyone's favorite mayor, in a speech on 7/7 spoke out in favor of more gun control.

So Rahm, what are you going to do for more gun control. C'mon Man, it's already against the law to shoot people. Do you think the shooters are not going to stop shooting each other because of some new gun law? Get Real Rahm. Throw those azzholes in jail, don't just pat 'em on the fanny and send 'em home.

I believe the Ted Nugent theory of "gun control" is to hit your intended target every time.

Mike/GFC - I agree that the CDC figures are for total deaths, not just terrorist related. But they do convey the fact that you're safer now in America than in any time in a long while. I'm tired of the fear industry.

Since 9/11 the death by terrorists in America is even more telling, I think the number is somewhere around zero. Prior to that single day, I think the deaths by terrorists in America were also around zero for a long, long time - except OK City and World Trade Center I in '93.

We could call Timothy McVeigh a terrorist. The Blind Sheik certainly is. But I'm not sure that our militarized LEOs would have prevented those attacks. Maybe more situational awareness is called for. But again, no amount of automatic weapons, MRAPS, and tooled up LEOs would have prevented what really was an intel failure. We didn't lose a gun fight with terrorists. Same for 9/11.

But I'm with you on personal responsibility for your own safety and have taken measures to ensure I'm not defenseless; .22, 7mm, 9mm, .223 ... only lacking either the 12 or 20 gauge.

Do you really think that a rubber boat manned with kids and a machine gun

I don't think they'd appreciate being referred to as "kids". They are not. They have serious, and sometimes, extremely dangerous jobs and I'm glad they're out there with arms.

They may be younger than you, but anyone in the military cannot still be considered a "kid".
