Where to stop

Those who have been following our blog www.denandken.wordpress.com know we will be starting our next ten day leg up the ICW soon. We intend to stop in Charleston and the put the boat into wet storage, mooring or slip, for three to four weeks. Any suggestions? 12 ft beam 36 ft long and 3.5 ft draft.

We are at Ashley Marina for a similar stay over. It's a good place with reasonable monthly rates, but I think they go up shortly, if not already.

I wouldn't ignore St John's Yacht Harbor. It depends on what you need. They're just outside the Charleston city limits and have lower rates. But it's quite a nice facility. As in all cases, read the reviews about the facility to see what a large variety of boaters experienced.

Are you staying on the boat or leaving it and going somewhere? St. Johns Yacht Harbor has a pool and nice showers and rest rooms but you'll need a car to go anywhere. The Charleston City Marina is close to town and public transportation (I think).

Charleston Harbor Marina has a pool and an adjacent restaurant and hotel. You can take the water taxi into Charleston.

St John's Yacht Harbor has a courtesy car which can satisfy much in the way of transportation needs. It's quite well protected and is a safe place to keep a boat. We'll be there when this blasted weather clears.

Charleston City Marina is quite a shlep from downtown - we stayed there for month once - never again. They have a van that will take you to a couple of places. The current there is dangerous at mid tide situations.

Charleston Maritime Center is the best situated to walk around Charleston. It's a very small marina though and you can get beat up there in some weather conditions. I wouldn't leave a boat there. We've stayed there for a month too.

Charleston Harbor Marina has the water taxi and a scheduled trolly. We've stayed there for a week at a time and usually are there for a few days each season. We'll be there when this blasted weather clears.

To really help provide suggestions for Charleston, more information is needed about what services are desirable.

If you just want to store the boat in the water and leave it for a few weeks, Cooper River Marina might be a good bet.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation - Cooper River Marina

It's not near anything of interest but it's probably closer to the airport than the others.

We don't require many services since we plan on leaving the boat for another three weeks or so. Simply safe wet storage on either a slip or mooring.

I agree with rwidman then, Cooper River Marina is a good choice. I originally thought you would be on the boat and not leaving it.
