New Nautical word

Back in '85, a question on my Master's licence exam asked, "How much is a shot of chain?" Without knowing whether it was name brand or from the bar's rail, I had no idea what the price was. :blush:

Growing up the term porpoise was used aboard ours, rather than pitch. I still prefer/use porpoise.

Porpoising is different than pitching...porposing is because of trim and can occur in flat water ....pitch is because of waves...

Porpoising is a bow-up condition that slightly resembles a porpoise with its nose out of the water. Porpoising results from an out drive or outboard motor that is trimmed too far up because the operator overcompensated when trimming the boat. When a boat is porpoising, the visibility of the operator may be impaired and the boat difficult to steer. Correct the condition as soon as the boat porpoises to ensure safe operation.

Interesting psneed... never knew that. Thanks! Don't know that vision was ever an issue on our 40'er nor is it aboard Seaweed. I rather suspect that my dad used the term to alleviate fears of Mother. Porpoise sounds benign. Pitching doesn't.

But words have meaning so I'll try to switch over to the proper terminology. Thanks for the education.

Got real familiar with porposing and chine walk when running Sea Ray Sundecks...those little boats would do 60mph and trying to teach new owners NOT to kill themselves involved letting them ALMOST get there sometimes...so I read up on those two so I wouldn't wind up in the water with them....
