A Summary of our Bahamas Winter Adventure

We departed Key Largo 10 December and returned to Miami, 31 January 2014.

In those 53 days, I had to leave dauntless and return to NYC for 23 days (I didn't want to miss the snowstorm).

Total days on boat (not including 23 days I was in NYC) 30 days, of these 30 days, two thirds of our days were spent moving from one place to another. Most were small moves, but we had a third of the time that we had a full day, 6 to 8 hours, or more, of travel. The only time I spent more than two nights in the same place was the 5 days in Nassau, when I came back from NY, as I got the boat ready to return to Florida.

We traveled 700 nm in 135 engine hours, averaging 5.2 nm/hr., consuming 215 gal of diesel. Now, this =1.6 gal/hr.:D, but the fuel consumed includes 47 hours of Generator time. We did have a little Inverter problem:blush:, which meant that we had to run the generator probably 50% more time than normal to charge the batteries.

But even with that, if I subtract about 40 gal from our use, the main engine only used about 1.3 gal/hour! :dance:Which equals 4 nm/gal and at $4.00/gal cost of fuel, a rough estimate is $1/nm.

KK42-148 has been exactly what we needed and hoped for.

Great report. Are you staying on the boat in Florida, or just fly down and stay for long weekends?

Having read many of your posts, I think you'll (and most of those who read my posts in the first place) will understand that while I certainly will admit to a caviler attitude when it comes to cruising on Dauntless, (as you will read when i get the last three days posted) when it comes to my writing, i am far more miticulas and that's what's keeping me up at night.

Too much in fact.

But i am proud of the fact, that I will go where many fear to tread and it's not an exaggeration when i said that i did spend three days on the ICW only seeing one other small boat, the sheriff's boat. (My sister-in-law adn her husband who were with me still have talked to me since:confused:)

Organizing my pictures is another big issue. It made really gun shy when I discovered last week that a program who shall remain nameless, decided to "share" every picture i had on my hard drive:eek::eek: for afew hours before i caught it.

So now i triple check every upload and am now full of dupes.:facepalm:


I'll probably be in Miami for February and then Ft. Pierce for March, heading north on April Fool's Day.:dance:

Having kept up with your travels to Maine and then back South to the Bahamas, it is readily apparent that you will take your boat to adventurous places. That and your planning a crossing are certainly things of cruising interest. You and Mark (Daddyo) with your long single handed passages are cruisers extraordinare. Thanks for letting us tag along.

Yeah, I lost my crew mate to love. So I was alone from Nassau. On one hand, I don't feel responsible for anyone else, but on the other hand, sometimes I miss the most simple of things.

By the way, where is Mark???
 
Lat year most of my winter trip I travelled fairly full days...rarely less than 4, mostly 6-7 and yet still quite a few 7-10 hr days.

This year I have a lot of 1-4 hrs days and if I even though about averaging speed based on time it would drive me nuts. Several days I spent more time circling and waiting or looking around a corner at 2-3 knots than the actual trip between 2 marinas/anchorages. So sometimes I clocked 1-2 hrs to go 3-10 miles...so that would throw my engine hrs distance run figures way off.

My calculations for efficiency I've established already and like mine like you like yours. When I get closer to home in the spring and start running more 8-10 hr days without any exploring or loitering....I'll recheck to see how I am doing.

Off to a good start though...I'm envious of those numbers and I'll bet your true cruising speed is higher than in the 5.2 range....when you are really making distance and with that fuel burn I'm envious of the KK42 efficiency.
 
Rich: Sorry I'm not still in Key Biscayne to hose you for a while, but meanwhile, give a shout when you're headed for Ft. Pierce. I may still be here in Stuart and Don has a lot of beer stash....could meet you there.

Richard...enjoyed your post. Sounds fun. Look forward to further details. BTW, there's a shorthand word for "nm/hr," which I take to mean "nautical miles per hour." If that is indeed what you meant, the word for it is "knots."

Hi Arch, I noticed your by-line. I have a Marine Trader 36! Are you a trunk, Europa, or Sundeck?

Where on the Great Loop are you?

I'll look around for other posts, but very interested on how the MT manages in all the various environments of the Great Loop.
