New Leds

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I'm sure you'll like them, N4712. I bought 30 element LEDs like that for the ER and am very pleased with the new current draw and the lighting. Wish I did it sooner.
Yeah, between the whole boat being incandescent and halogens we drew WAYY to many amps.

Anybody have a source for a replacement LED bulb for our mini fluorescents? They make up the bulk of the lighting on our boat.

Greetings,
Mr. D. Now THAT'S a good question. There are very few incandescent bulbs on our vessel. Most cabin lights are 18" fluorescent. Would REALLY like a white/red for the lower station if travelling after dark. Thanks.

Greetings,
Mr. 4712. Thanks, information filed. Gadzooks, I could even use one of the second ones for the dog! Hound bling?

Here are two footers. Not sure of the voltage though, they probably won't work. 24" T8 LED Fluorescent

Another way you could switch them to led is to buy these little strips and hard wire them.
4 x 30cm Waterproof 15 1210 SMD Flexible LED Light Lamp Strip White DC 12V | eBay

The 2 footers need AC voltage between 85 to 285V AC to operate, no DC.

I'm not sure the strips will be bright enough. The web site doesn't reference the lumens but for $5.40 and free shipping, why not?

Here's a link for a conversion. I'm finding the Rver's seem to be a head of us boat types in LED lighting sometimes. :)

WanderMan: Convert Fluorescent Lights To LED Dual Use

For my fluorescents...I bought a 15 foot roll of the brighter LED tape for like $13....

I cut it into 8-1 foot lengths and put 2 per light fixture....tie wrapped them up as the tape sticky is a little weak.

Had enough to do a small one in the galley and still have a 6 foot that I plan to use on one side of the engine room.

The 2-1 foot sections per fixture in the saloon are now about twice as bright as before...I figured $13 and a couple hrs of my time was worth it till I redo the entire saloon overhead and just use new fixtures.

When you redo your salon what fixtures are you going to use?

too far down the road still...by the time I get to it...hopefully the ONLY fixtures on the market will be LED...:D:thumb::D

I did that:) about $6 a fixture.

Our adventure to convert the boat to LED, the next thing is the spreaders on the boat deck, and flybridge pointing spreader. After shooting an email to James Hamilton who owns an N52 that changed his to LED, I got some links and going ahead. The smaller one will be used for the flybridge facing light and well have two of the big ones for the boat deck. I'm also going to put a another small LED next to the hailer right above the FWD PH windows. And also here's an pic of the boat as setup currently. Note: this was before we replaced the halogens with LED's inside the boat. Also some photo of James' setup, mine will be the same exact setup, minus the side facing ones.

U got all of my replacement led bulbs on Amazon.
Whatever base I needed, I found there, from the E30 base that looks like 120v, but isn't, to the H3 halogen spreader lights, to all my er (cool white) & living spaces (warn white) and lastly a bunch of strip lighting.

Even my 30 year old vdo instrument lights, now in a cool green.

Even a 28 year old engine room brightens up with some new led lights....:thumb:

Here's a night comparison. Those are the two together about 2ft apart.

Very nice, Oliver. What are the specs on those lamps? (lumens, power, etc.)

I installed aft-facing 400 lumen LED speaders and love 'em. They're not as bright as yours, but they sure illuminate the field of water behind the boat well for night fishing. The beam is wide enough that the fishing rod tips are in the beam and the scattered light evenly illuminates the cockpit.

When it's foggy and I'm the lone boat at anchor, I leave them on all the time with minimal effect on the batteries. They give me added peace of mind that others will see me in the fog.

The first pic shows the new LED spreaders. The second pic is the former single incandescent or halogen flood.

The little 10 watt ones arrived too. They are smaller then I expected, but none the less bright. Very happy. :)

OK this is a great thread but we're here to save each other time/hassle/money, how about some links to suppliers. Spread the love a bit:flowers:

I just bought 20 of those for .49 each. Considering they are pennies to make, $25 each definitely is paying for somebody's pension.

Source on Ebay?

Mark,

The Amazon links are in the posts. Click the links and paste the name/model number into an eBay search box.

I bought the Optronics LED docking lights on a shopping whim while trolling through Bass Pro Shop in 2010. I didn't do any research and would probably buy different lamps if I was shopping today. The do the trick well and I like the lighting and low draw, but others buyers have had problems with leaking fixtures and resultant failures. I keep my boat in a covered slip and have had no issues out in the rain, but I'm keeping an eye on them.

Here's an comparison of the 10 watt light. Since I got RGb ones the light isn't totally white.
