I finally got around to replacing the gate valves on my fresh water manifold (two tanks) with ball valves. A forensic autopsy showed that the one gate valve failed due to the gate being frozen into the slot. When I turned the valve handle, the stem twisted off.

>Never use gate valves.<

ALL valves require some maint.

Usually just opening and closing will do just fine.

Make a list , and say every 2 months cycle the valve .

SS / plastic ball valves stick too,

I believe lack of "exercise" caused the valve to fail. We only use the bow tank once a year when we go to Catalina Island and need all the water we can carry. I am going to add the manifold valves to my maintenance schedule. The valves are located up against the aft engine room bulkhead, right behind the gen set. When I installed the gen set, I had a bad feeling about the valves and left access room to get at them. Glad I did.
