Detroit diesel 453 rebuilds

We just spun the idler shaft rear bearing in our starboard engine in or 42' 1981 Grand Banks trawler. Does any one know of a reputable source for rebuilt or reconditioned engines of this type? We are located in the mobile area so a gulf coast - Florida to Texas source would work for us. My mechanic is fully capable of rebuilding the engine with the block being reworked in a New Orleans Detroit diesel shop that is well recommended but I'm looking for options. We were planning to head to Florida for the winter months but trip is off for now. Help and advice appreciated.

Here's one in St. Cloud FL.. It's been on Craigslist for a couple months. Looks like a good deal.

Thanks guys. I used to actually get the Yellow "Boats and Harbors" and it never crossed my mind. And the search continues.

Kennedy engine here in Biloxi can pull it and rebuild it. Johnson Diesel can do it as well.

I would reccomend Diesel Spcialists in Baton Rouge. We actually take care of their forklift needs and I can get you in touch with the "right people" there if you want to PM me. They are HUGE into DDs.

Again, thanks for all the input. Just to bring you up to date we are removing the starboard engine and will be taking the block to New Orleans for machining by a company that does that kind of work for Stuart Stevenson, a Detroit distributor. During that process we are also going to remove the old tired generator while we can get to it and install a new westebeke 15kw. We decided we would also rebuild the port engine while waiting for the block to be returned.

While a bit over the top we were just getting ready to leave on the great loop when the starboard engine let go. This postponed adventure will probably be done in one or two month legs with a total of 8000 to 9000 miles being covered. We felt it best to address the other engine potential problems while home and in the good hands of our local mechanic, Davison marine, and having the facilities at turner marine available to us.. We are looking at probably two months on the hard and will probably not start the loop until this next fall doing local cruising instead while we attend to our real estate and property management business for the busy summer season.

Since much of the loop is north of the US , most folks go in summer when the water is not solid.

Our home port is dauphin island, Al. At the mouth of mobile bay so the Florida leg would be our first unless we tried a reverse loop. We feel it is best to keep her home during hurricane season where we can go hide up the river if necessary. April through August is also our busiest season for our vacation rental business here on the island and is the hardest time for us to take an extended time off, thus the Fall will have to do for now.
